Needs Expansion, Less Jargon

Usually Routledge prints high quality materials, but in this case I found Susan Baker's book 'Sustainable Development' to be an exception to the rule

The book begins in good spirits with a theoretical overview of sustainable development, which includes its basic origins, history (e.g. Brundtland report), what sustainable development means, and basic definitions of common terms. However, the remaining sections of the book are less appealing for the reason that Baker needlessly mingles her prose with the kind of "socio-economic" jargon that causes our heads to spin. As an intro text, I would assume the concepts broached could be handled in a more introductory and down to earth fashion. Perhaps I am alone in this view, but whenever I witness such jargon laden prose, I interpret it as the mark of poor writing trying to masquerade as good writing. Moreover, to intentionally use acrolectic jargon when simpler terms could be used is just plain irritating--why? Because jargon obscures and veils meaning, and is being used simply to "talk-up" what the writer otherwise fears might sound banal and plain. Baker suffers from this tendency throughout and it makes for difficult (and ultimately mediocre) writing that obscures the importance and seriousness of its subject.

This isn't to say, however, that we cannot learn from Baker's text. Surely we can, but my point is that she hasn't eased the transition and exchange of dialogue between the important concepts and the reader.

Even though the lack of breadth and brevity with which things are presented leaves much to be desired, we shouldn't blame Baker for all the book's shortcomings. When I say this isn't Baker's fault I am being sincere, since a) this is a relatively new book and area of academic research, and b) she appears to have worked alone on the book without help from others. I assume that as further editions are printed, revisions and additions will be added in order to create a more complete work.

So, can we blame Baker for not being completely right the first time around? Absolutely not, since she does do some things well (historical surveys, terminological overviews, and relevance to the present). But we still ought to be aware of certain irritating tendencies (jargon laden prose) and oversights (lack of breadth, if not depth) that commonly appear throughout the work.

About the Author
After attending Stanford University, where he majored in Economics and Speech, BERTRAND R. BRINLEY was a methods and procedures analyst for Lockheed Aircraft's engineering department. He entered the Army in 1944 and served fifteen years in a variety of infantry and public relations assignments, including position of aide-de-camp to the chief of the United Nations delegation during the Korean armistice negotiations. He retired from active duty in order to devote himself to writing, and held a commission as major in the United States Army Reserve. He later worked in technical writing and public relations positions for the Martin Company. The author of Rocket Manual for Amateurs, Bertrand Brinley lectured extensively to schools and civics groups on space age topics. His articles and stories appeared in Harper's Magazine, Boys' Life, Family Weekly, Woman's Day, The Microwave Journal, Electronics Illustrated and The Book of Knowledge. Bertrand Brinley is well-known for his beloved tales of the Mad Scientists' Club, whose further antics can be found in The New Adventures of the Mad Scientists' Club, The Big Kerplop! and The Big Chunk of Ice.

Dinky Poore didn't really mean to start the story about the huge sea monster in Strawberry Lake. He was only telling a fib because he had to have an excuse for getting home late for supper. So he told his folks he'd been running around the lake trying to get a closer look at a huge, snakelike thing he'd seen in the water, and the first thing he knew he was too far from home to get back in time.

His mother and father greeted the tale with some skepticism. But Dinky's two sisters were more impressionable, and that's how the story really got out. They kept pestering him for so many details about the monster that he had to invent a fantastic tale to satisfy them. That's one of the troubles with a lie. You've got to keep adding to it to make it believable to people.

It didn't take long for the story to get around town, and pretty soon Dinky Poore was a celebrity in Mammoth Falls. He even had his picture in the paper, together with an "artists conception" of the thing he'd seen. It was gruesome-looking -- something like a dinosaur, but with a scaly, saw-toothed back like a dragon. Dinky was never short on imagination, and he was able to give the artist plenty of details.

It was the artists' sketch in the newspaper that got Henry Mulligan all excited. Henry is First Vice President and also Chief of Research for the Mad Scientists' Club and is noted for his brainstorms. Neither Henry nor anyone else in the club actually believed Dinky had seen a real monster, but we were all willing to play along with the gag -- especially when Henry suggested that we could build a monster just like the one shown in the newspaper.

The Finest Science-Based Stories For Boys (and Adventure Seeking Girls) Ever Written

There have been plenty of science-based children's stories written over the years, but Bertrand R. Brinley's Mad Scientists' Club stories are something special. A combination of excellent true-to-life writing, simple yet sound science (with a single exception), and a gently wicked sense of fun have produced a marvelous collection of stories that seem as clever and fresh as when they came out more than forty years ago. The secret? The fact that the Mad Scientists of Mammoth Falls use science not for building great inventions or solving great mysteries, but primarily for playing clever pranks on the well deserving.

In "The Strange Sea Monster of Strawberry Lake", Dinky Poore makes up a story about seeing a sea monster in order to explain being late for dinner. His fellow club members decide to build a sea monster. Hi-jinks ensue.

In "Night Rescue" the boys make clever use of simple scientific principles in order to rescue a downed Air Force pilot.

In "The Unidentified Flying Man of Mammoth Falls" the boys liven up Mammoth Falls' Founder's Day celebration with a flying man.

In "The Big Egg" the boys try to hatch a fossil dinosaur egg. (!) It gets an A for story and an F for science.

In "The Secret of the Old Cannon" the boys use a combination of cutting edge science (for 1963) and simple basics to solve an unsolved bank robbery (and embarrass a couple of sneaks trying to take credit for their work).

In "The Great Gas Bag Race" the boys come up with a truly brilliant concept for winning a balloon race.

In "The Voice in the Chimney" the boys hilariously haunt a house.

I find it difficult to put into words just how much fun these stories are. I enjoyed them as a boy; I enjoyed them as a man; I'll read them to my children; and I'm sure that they will pass them on to their children. Mr. Brinley wrote three more books about the Mad Scientists' Club: The New Adventures of the Mad Scientists' Club, The Big Kerplop!: The Original Adventure of the Mad Scientists' Club, and The Big Chunk of Ice: The Last Known Adventure of the Mad Scientists' Club, all of them great, but this, the first one is IMHO the best.

Note: the Purple House 50th anniversary reprint of The Mad Scientists' Club is worth picking up even if you own an older edition because the text is based on the original manuscripts, restoring a number of passages that had been cut for space reasons when they were first published in Boys' Life. It also includes an introduction written by Bertrand's son Sheridan and a chronological listing of the stories so you can read them in the order they were written (the order of the stories in the book was not changed). Reading them chronologically clears up some confusion over places, geographical references, and characters, though according to internal references "The Big Egg" takes place before "The Secret of the Old Cannon".

Great for Girls

Not only boys will enjoy this wonderful collection of stories. I'm a girl & this was one of my favorite books growing up. The adventures are much better than Nancy Drew or those... *opinion* inane 'babysitter' books. I highly recommend this book & am currently purchasing my second copy in addition to putting the rest of the mad scientist books on my wish list. These books would make great presents for any child.

Brains Can Be Cool!

Like many of the other reviewers of this book, I read it repeatedly as a boy. I identified with the characters. I loved the way they used their intelligence and knowledge of science to get themselves in and out of mischief, and sometimes to help people. And let's not forget to mention Brinley's easy reading style and Geer's terrific illustrations. But one lesson I took away from this book (and its sequel) was that it was perfectly fine to be a skinny geek who was interested in science. These guys solved all kinds of real life problems without the benefit of brawn, large amounts of money, or even magic (a la Harry Potter).

An easy style read with step by step processes to help you find your personal core of greatness. Enjoy the success of a rare breed of manager - who is strong, secure and energising those around them to liberate their inner strengths and attain new horizons. There is something for everyone on this book written by a quality individual with a passion to impart his learnings to others. Highly recommended.

Written from experience

Bruce Holland has sat down, thought and written about what he has learned from around 30 years of experience, reading and observation. His personal digest of how people think, behave and interact is both honest and accessible. To illustrate his points he draws on and integrates a large number of scientific studies from all manner of disciplines, without getting lost in scientific jargon.

He presents the book in three parts in a way that (it seems to me) has a strong parallel with sports motivation, where athletes aim to excel through training their minds as much as their bodies.

The first part explains and illustrates how each of us is capable of thinking and working more effectively. The second part describes exercises and techniques that we can adopt to achieve this improvement. The third considers the impact we might then have in the workplace and the community.

Bruce's language is friendly and deliberately a little vulnerable, which he explains without apology. At times he uses short stories to illustrate his points. Now and then he presents an idea that immediately resonates; one for me was “In many organisations, managers see themselves as managers of assets. In organisations that achieve Organisational Greatness, managers see themselves as managers of energy.”

I think this is a valuable book. Like me, some readers will skip the exercises and look for the quick answers, but even they should find something here that is easy to adopt and rewarding to pursue. That makes the book worth keeping. It's a book I intend returning to as my own experience, reading and thinking matures.
