The Land of Schools

If I was to recommend a region of the United States to visit for people from abroad or other first-timers, New England would be it. While other places may be more iconic (New York or California), or more exciting, or more geographically awesome, or even more historically rich and better preserved, none of those places has the balance of ALL of those things the way New England does. From a home base in Boston - America's London - you're not more than a day trip from anywhere in this guide.

Literally having something for everyone, this guide is a nice thick introduction to the region. I say introduction because it does a good job of covering the highlights. Depth is somewhat lacking, mostly because there's just not enough room for it. In order to allow the book to be geographically comprehensive, it has to be thematically selective. Many topics are thinly covered, which may prove to be distracting for seasoned travelers. Some topics that are well covered and also tend to be feature attractions are the numerous historic museum towns (such as Deerfield, Strawberry Banke, Salem, Sturbridge, Shelburne, Hancock), Fall foliage routes, and numerous outdoor attractions.

Four distinct seasons (particularly the Fall), historic architecture, education, American colonial history, gorgeous rolling mountainous geography, and the cultural institutions of Boston prove to be the highlights of the region for good reason. This book will introduce you to all of those things, and provides the foundation for further exploration into all of them. Don't expect to find every answer in this book and you'll be satisfied. Keep your expectations realistic.

Listings of hotels and restaurants are selective but are representative. Maps are very simple and will not replace your need for a GPS or exceptional sense of direction.

Foder's used to be the go-to place for travel info ...

Foder's used to be the go-to place for travel info. I think the internet has made the need for this type of travel info obsolete. We are spending a lot of time in New England now that our son is in college in Maine. There are several places that we have discovered in the last several months, many of them major, and none of them are covered in this most recent Foders. This book just skims the surface and in fact, someone new to Foders might even assume that venders pay to get included. I would skip this book, do a little online research instead, and stop at the different State's Welcome Centers on the road. Very disappointing.

Fodor's "New England" travel guide is an excellent introduction to a diverse region offering historical attractions, great scenery, and multiple recreational opportunities. All too many folks know no more of the Northeast than can seen from the I-95 corridor. In fact, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine have hundreds of years of history and considerable natural beauty in the form of mountains, woodlands, lakes and seashores to share with visitors.

This Fodor's guide surveys each state, covering the major regions, noting scenic routes, sites of tourist interest, recreational opportunities, and suggestions for accomodations and dining. Skiing in Vermont, hiking in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, historic Old Boston, and the beautiful coastlines of Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Maine get their due emphasis. The guide provides a variety of maps, including diagrams of the downtown areas of some of the major cities and a detachable driving map. Insets highlight items of local history or interest. Commentary on travel to and within New England, along with brief weather and safety considerations, is included.

Fodor's guides continue to be updated year by years. The most recent versions are well-organized for quick use, with concise commentary, a nice selection of photographs and lots of good recommendations for what to see and where to stay and/or eat. This edition features a special section on where and when to see the best fall foliage. Highly recommended to visitors planning their first vacation the New England region.

Since childhood I used to chant mantras but in ‘97, I fell ill due to over activation of the chakras. In ‘98, I started helping other people on this path, though only through photographs mailed to me as it was not possible to attend to so many people in person. It takes few seconds to upgrade or balance the energy of a person but it takes hours to explain the science. So, I decided to write this book. It is a humble offering. As it is an endless journey, my search is still on. My apologies for any mistakes. Your suggestions for the improvement of this book are welcome. This book has changed the way I use to look at life.. I have read this book in english long time back.. A Book Ahead of Its' Time

Karp's "Indispensable Enemies" is a mind-blowing, eye-opening book!
If published in more recent times, it would have been a top seller, since
it exposes a political culture that explains why nothing ever gets done
in Washington and why billions of dollars are wasted. While the reading
of this long, densely-written book is sometimes difficult, it is worth the effort.
I would recommend this book, written in the 70s, to all political science
students, activists, and anyone who wants to become more sophisticated about
the real deal with our country's political leaders.

The critique of US politics by a romantic reactionary

There are times when a critic approaches a popular subject of criticism, only from an angle exactly opposite to the common one. Marx and Engels used to praise Honor� de Balzac, noted reactionary French writer of critical novels, for his accurate and representative criticism of the corruption and oppression in the society of Napoleon III, even though their political viewpoint (in other words, what they thought was the solution to those problems) was the precise opposite of Balzac's. To a great degree, the same principle operates here with Walter Karp's polemic "Indispensable Enemies".

In this book, Walter Karp, a writer for Harper's Magazine, criticizes the incorrect assumptions of American political pundits and journalists about American political parties and their operation. Usually American politics is portrayed as the contest between the two major parties over winning elections, whereby the party that manages to win the most elections is doing the best, and all involved in each party are assumed to strive for as much election victory as possible. Not so, says Karp: in reality, both political parties are run entirely as political machines, although it is very taboo among politics watchers to point this out. This means that the leadership of these parties in fact often want to LOSE elections, if winning the election would imply that a reformer candidate, unliked by the leadership, would win. After all, both political machines rely on the other to stay effective, so for a Democratic machine leader it is better that a Republican machine candidate win than that a Democratic anti-machine candidate win.

From this obviously correct premise - after all, why are so many parts of America perpetually in the hands of one party or the other? Even with gerrymandering taken into account, if all parties strove for was election victory, why can't the Democrats run a 'clone', i.e. a candidate with the exact same programme as the Republicans, in a district where they always lose? - Karp deduces many insights about the real functioning of America's parties and political leaders throughout the 20th Century. There is much in here to be praised, since it gives a very sober and sobering look at the actual behavior of such supposed heroes of reform as F.D. Roosevelt and L.B. Johnson, and Karp is very useful in tracing how they responded to any candidate who genuinely represented a reform, such as Huey Long or Eugene McCarthy. Absolutely essential here for understanding American politics is Karp's emphasis on the practice, by both parties, of purposely 'throwing' elections when a victory would have harmed their status quo.

However, Karp approaches everything the wrong way up, and that leads to many oddities. He is absolutely ideologically opposed to any kind of principle that implies that politicians are influenced by anything external - he rejects theories that attempt to describe American politicians' behavior in terms of lobbyist pressures, class interests, and so on as ridiculous. Rather, he seems to be of that rare breed who genuinely believe in the rhetoric of the American republic, that is that all American citizens basically are equal, have the same interests, and would fairly and democratically resolve their differences at a local level of directly involved democracy if it weren't for nefarious and corrupt politicians dividing them in order to rule. The whole Jeffersonian model of politics is Karp's uncritically idolized model, and this means that where his criticisms are often apt, his solutions and ideological commentary are anachronistic and absurd. Although he has some interesting criticisms to make about many prevailing analyses of American politics as being driven by business interests (he is quite right about the role of the opposite, businesses being bribed by special legislative favors and so being 'taken into the fold', having been ignored by too many such critics), he utterly ignores things like the role of money in election campaigns, the meaning of lobbyists, the role of global economics, and so on.

Karp was clearly a principled republican of the old type, and his intelligent eye pierces many a smokescreen that has baffled more modern and radical critics. His book is of use for improving one's understanding of the practical political side of American politics, rather than focusing just on the 'official' ideological side. However, he was also an anachronism, backward-looking and naive about the nature of the American state as much as he was critical and insightful about the nature of American politicians.

valuable critique of our broken electoral system

Uses exhaustive historical references to specific instances of election manipulation.
Offers a motive and structure to many of the issues that have seemed to be "mistakes" when seen on the news, and the inability of our elected leaders to effect useful change.
Has a tendency to reach too far to provide support for his theories, in some cases, but his central thesis remains intact.

About the Author
Aaron Podolefsky is Provost and Vice President for Academic at the University of Northern Iowa, where he also served eight years as Dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. He received his Ph.D. in Anthropology from the State University of New York at Stony Brook and also holds degrees in Liberal Studies and Mathematics. He has authored books on law in Papua New Guinea and crime prevention in urban America. Peter J. Brown is a Professor of Anthropology at Emory University, where he also holds a faculty position in the Rollins School of Public Health. He is currently director of Emory's Center for the Study of Health, Culture and Society. He has served as an officer in the Society for Medical Anthropology and was Editor-in-Chief of the journal Medical Anthropology for nine years. He has done research on a variety of topics, including malaria, tuberculosis, obesity, Alzheimer's disease, male gender and health, and the history of international health policy. He has been the recipient of three teaching awards. He has co-edited The Anthropology of Infectious Disease (with Marcia Inhorn) as well as the textbooks Applying Anthropology (sixth edition) and Applying Cultural Anthropology (fifth edition) (both with Aaron Podolefsky. �Scott M. Lacy�joined Podolefsky and Brown on the ninth and tenth editions of Applying Anthropology. �Lacy is�Assistant Professor of Anthropology at Fairfield University. �He is�also the founder and executive director of AfricanSky.Org, a social-profit organization that fosters community-based collaborations with rural farmers and technology experts in rural Mali.

Great Read

I am an anthropology student and this book was a required read for my applied anthro class. I am SO glad I had to get this book because it is incredibly informative and an over all interesting read. It has tons of short articles/chapters written by anthropologists about the different ways in which they use anthropology. The chapters range from forensics/biological to CRM to policy to cultural studies. This book is so informative and really opens your eyes to the many ways that anthroplogy can be used in the modern world. As an anthro student who is graduating soon, I am so glad I read this book because it has really made me aware of the variety of opportunities anthropologists have in the job world. I would recommend this book to anyone, not just anthros! It is so interesting and makes you think about the way you view the world and what's going on around you.

Terrific resource!

Really good, (relatively) short articles on a variety of anthropological topics. I use this to supplement the textbook for the Cultural Anthro class I teach. Students enjoy reading and discussing the topics - and because the articles are so well organized, it makes it easy for me to pick articles that pertain to that night's teaching objective.

Excellent Technical Medical Book

I can't express how much information is crammed into this book! It is by far the most detailed and diverse medical guide I have found so far. Being that this is designed for tactical situations and for Military/Government, there are no annoying "Seek medical attention immediately" or "Call 911" references after each section. It is more for the Docs and battlefield or deployment situations. On this note, it is designed for people with medical experience, or at least knowledge in medical terms. No worries there, as there is a very large list of abbreviations in the back... but it can be a pretty technical read. Here are the things I like most about this handbook:

. Very detailed index of terms.
. Trade names of generic drugs.
. SOF Medical Handbook Abbreviations.
. Physical/Mental Conditions.

Now there aren't many diagrams or pictures, BUT the ones that are in there are VERY helpful. This book wasn't necessarily designed to be a pictorial demonstration of how to perform medical procedures. The print is kind of small, so I wouldn't use this as a field guide.. but more of a reference to sit and study to assist in diagnosis. When I say that this book is jam packed with information, its JAM PACKED! Of course there are plenty of blank pages at the end to make notes if you choose to do so.

Also, this is the Second Edition.. which is updated through 2008. That said, it has a lot of information about PTSD and common mental conditions with today's combat veterans. A handful of techniques are explained in regards to moving bodies and using casualty baskets. I was ultimately surprised that it went into dentistry with such detail.. which was awesome. What it comes down to is this.. GET THIS BOOK! Especially for the price, it can save a life and keep your family safe when 911 or emergency units aren't available.

As a corpsman I used this book while in the field without a medical provider or doctor. Would recommend to anyone in such conditions or planning to be. Very in depth and well rounded for all kinds of conditions, keep in mind it has the background that is for a true special forces operator behind lines with very limited medical support. Can be technical and detailed in some areas. The intro states that it was designed along the lines that if the authors had been in the wilderness with basic skills and no medical support how would they treat their family member if they had "x" condition. The book truly takes that saying to heart.

SOF Medic Handbook

First, I am a retired Army Physician and taught one phase of the Special Forces Medic Course. I am very familiar with this book. This printing is a civilian reprint and quite good. If you have a medical background (ie EMT, LPN or RN) it will be very useful. It is packed with knowledge and can be overwhelming if you have no background in medicine. It should have a place in you Prepper Reference Library. BUT, be aware that this book is not printed on water-proof paper like the issue book. The issue book is water resistant and tear resistant. It is made to be stuffed in a ruck sack or aid bag and survive in an austere environment. Therefore it is more expensive but the cost is worth it if you plan to have this in your BOB and use it in a field setting. It is available thru the Government Printing Office www.bookstore.gpo.gov stock number 008-070-00810-6 and the cost is $59. Make no mistake, the reprint here is excellent and well worth the price. It just won't survive long in your BOB or field medic bag.

An Excellent Book to Brush Up On Geometry

I used this book to brush up on my Geometry, and boy, did it put me to work. What I liked about the book are the explanations of Geometric ideas, theorems, particularly the proofs. But this book will put you to work with all the problems that it has in it. Some sections are easier to finish than others, but once you get to the proofs, they'll take some time to complete.

Overall, this book almost works like a text-book given the volume of material and explanations and practice problems. I highly recommend this book.

Highly Recommended Geometry Book as Long as You Are Willing to Put In the Time.

I owe my knowledge of geometry to Lawrence Leff's E-Z Geometry.

Although the book claims that you will improve your grade in 30 days, that will be true, but it's going to take a long time to get through it. If you want to get the most out of it, be prepared to dig in deep and do every proof there is in the book. Like Euclid says, it is the "royal road to Geometry."

I've said this many times, and I will continue to say this: you cannot learn Geometry without doing two-sided proofs, and you cannot advance further in Geometry without memorizing the words, definitions, theorems, and postulates. Once you do, the royal road is filled with enlightenment. Euclid's 13 Books of Elements is one of the greatest, if not the greatest ever, contributions to mankind. The knowledge set out forth by his works is what shaped the thinking of men and women for the past two millennia, and all of it in a modern form can be found in E-Z Geometry. When you are mastering the book, you are essentially mastering what Euclid had laid out.

Doing the two sided proofs is the real significance and an important building block in your mathematical education. Once this is accomplished with fluency, you are ready to do Calculus and advanced mathematics including proofs.

Again, E-Z Geometry is a tough book, and a lot of time should be spent on it. It will be worth it for a lifetime, and you can learn so much. I know I did. If you are debating whether you want to get E-Z Geometry or something else like REA, The Humongous Book of Geometry Problems, or Schaum's, look no further. E-Z Geometry is the one to get because I've tried all of them, and I really think E-Z Geometry is the most friendly Geometry book you can possibly work with. Anyway, I've caught some errors. Here is the errata:

Chapter 4: 5b is correct, but the degrees of the angles, which are 125 and 55 don't match the picture which would have made it impossible anyway.
Chapter 12: 13 is 116, not 106.
Chapter 14: 42 is 162, not 169.
Chapter 14: 52 is 600pi, not 1800pi.
Chapter 16: 15c is 2, not 1.
Chapter 17: 19 is (1), not (2).
Chapter 17: 27 is y = -2x + 7, not y = 2x + 7.

I can't speak for the solutions of the proof since I've done mine my own way.

Now, let me tell you about proofs, something that most students don't understand. There is never a one way of doing proofs. If you decide to structure your proofs based on your own chain of reasoning arriving at the same goal as the author's, it is still correct as long as the reasons are valid. It means you don't have to follow the exact same way as the solution was laid out in the book or somebody else's. If it is different, it, in no way, means you are wrong. It's just the style the author has, and you should develop your own style that makes it unique. There is nothing wrong with it. That's the goal of any mathematics student: To create proofs in your own unique way. It is a lot better to do that than just to make up rubbish and try to pass it off as mathematics.

All in all, E-Z Geometry is the one to get if you want to master as much of Euclid's Geometry regardless of the fact that not everything about geometry is in the book; you will have to seek out further information in other books.

I did a quick review...and I like what I see...a VERY good job of covering most aspects of Geometry. I am sure this will work great for the kids that I tutor. I had been looking for some time, for the best book on Geometry, that I could find.
Is this the best...probably not...but it's darn close!

'How to Import Wine' is written in a direct manner, with clear explanations of the various requirements. The author includes personal scenarios at the end of each chapter that bring the contents to life.

Indispensable!

Deborah M. Gray begins "How to Import Wine: An Insider's Guide" talking about traveling through the countryside and finding that incredible wine you are certain is perfect for the American buying public. Immediately I was hooked. This is exactly my story. I had been a wine educator for years and felt that I had a pretty good handle on what American tastes were. All that was left to do was to find the right wines and the world would beat a path to my door.

Uh, wrong.

Wine importing is one big gray area. There are so many rules and regulations open for interpretation and unfortunately, they get interpreted and applied differently with every person you meet. In other words, wine importing can go from fun to daunting to downright confusing in a matter of days.

And this is the beauty of Deborah's book. She has been there and feels your pain. And most importantly, has lived to write about it. But here is the clincher. Yes, there are horror stories, but remarkably every page is filled with hope and humor. "How to Import Wine" is actually inspiring.

Each chapter covers one aspect of the wine import industry, from choosing your portfolio, to finding a distributor, to the ins and outs of shipping, etc. There is even a chart that shows you how to price your wines and what the final retail price should be. And it's not just a book about the big picture. Some of the details will have you thumping your head going, "I should have thought of that."

The final word? This book is indispensable if you, like me, have that dream to share your love of wine with America. And you won't put it down. You will keep referring to it like a beloved text book from your college years. Think lots of yellow highlighters and dogeared pages.

Deborah admits that wine importing it is hard work and takes determination, but the rewards are immeasurable. I highly recommend this book!

One of the best books on the US wines business

I had been looking for current and up to date information on the wine importing and distribution business and came upon Deborah's great book.

I didn't think a book about the wine business could be as interesting to read as this book was, but I found it very hard to put down. It is very well written. The narrative is informative with just the right tone. You feel like you are having a personal conversation with friend that is very knowledgeable about the business.

My personal interest was in finding out more about the importation of wines into the US and the distribution system that moves the product to retail. I got that and much more. Deborah provides detailed (and I mean detailed) description of what a person will encounter in the business. Lessons learned, pointers, and background on why you should do certain things over others are covered throughout.

I recommend this book to existing industry wine professionals, foreign wine producers, and anybody not in the wine business that desires a deep insider's view of how the wine business works in the US and how to be a part of it.

Heartfelt Captain America

I've been looking to get into Captain America for a while now, so I figured why not a story about Cap written by my favorite comic book writer, Mark Waid.

This story starts off fantastic in showing Steve and Bucky during WWII. Bucky being the real energetic guy, enjoying the limelight. Steve, on the other hand, is a solemn soldier. He just wants to do his duty for his country. The attention he's gained is unwanted by him, to the point that he semi disrespects the idea of Captain America in front of soldiers that idolize Cap.

This is a story about how Captain America goes from a time when he is most useful/needed, to a time when there's almost no need for him at all. This is a story about Cap's unfreezing, his wake into the 21st century. Everything has changed, and this story shows how he deals with the change.

There are some really, really heartfelt moments, heartbreaking at some points. References to historical events were perfect, so were Steve's reaction to finding out about them.

If I had one complaint, it's that the plot felt a little rushed with the points of conflict. If this story was longer, say Sueprman: Birthright length, I believe Waid would have done a flawless (as near flawless as it already is) story. But that's a minor issue because it's more of a Man vs. Self plot than Man vs. Man.

Overall, this story, to me, represents what Captain America is about. Self sacrifice, good natured, and the U.S.'s history and good values.

Deeply moving, a bittersweet tribute to America

This is a deeply moving and earnestly written miniseries. The story is what compelled me to buy it--Cap's feelings about the good and bad in both modern society and the post-WWII era mirror our own. Mark Waid did a great job in pacing each issue, although for the sake of storytelling some of our historical heroes are depicted as flawless. The last few pages are some of my favorites. Overall, it's hopeful and reflective, which is the reason I love Cap.
