Diane Tillman enjoyed working with young people and their families as a School Psychologist for 23 years in southern California. ABOUT THE PE EXAM

Civil PE Practice Examination provides the opportunity to practice taking an eight-hour test similar in content and format to the Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) examination in civil engineering. The civil PE examination is an eight-hour exam divided into a morning session and an afternoon session. The morning session is known as the ‘‘breadth’’ exam, and the afternoon session is known as the ‘‘depth’’ exam. This book contains a sample breadth module and five sample depth modules— one for each subdiscipline tested by NCEES. In the four-hour morning session, the examinee is asked to solve 40 problems from eight knowledge areas: project planning, means and methods, soil mechanics, structural mechanics, hydraulics and hydrology, geometrics, materials, and site development. Morning session problems are general in nature and wide-ranging in scope.

WAY harder than the actual exam, not a good thing

WAY harder than the actual PE exam, this practice exam actually was so hard that working through the problems actually ended up hurting my confidence, which I didn't think was worth it, so I ended up putting it down and working off of other NCEES practice exams. Those were way more similar to what I encountered in the real exam!

When Miss Marple Visits Friends, Murder Is Sure To Follow

Strange things have been happening at Stonygates, the home of Carrie Louise Martin, an old friend of Miss Marple's. Carrie Louise's sister, Ruth Van Rydock, has asked Miss Marple to visit Carrie Louise and determine what the trouble is and to alleviate her worries about her sister.
Agatha Christie once again takes us into a family estate overrun with family members. This family is particularly complex because Carrie Louise has been married three times and there is a wide assortment of relatives including stepsons, a widowed daughter, grandchildren, and even a current husband. The husband is deeply involved with corrective training and has turned the family home into a school where first offenders come for counseling and attention. So to this already strained situation, Mrs. Christie includes psychologists and therapists and a situation ripe for murder.
Indeed, three murders occur and there is much unpleasantness before Miss Marple explains it all.
This story (also published under the title "Murder With Mirrors") was adapted for TV in 1991 with Joan Hickson in the role of Miss Marple and Jean Simmons as Carrie Louise.

Minor but Entertaining

Also known under the title MURDER WITH MIRRORS, this 1952 Agatha Christie is neither the best nor the worst of her work. Set in a decaying English mansion, the grounds of which have become home to an experimental school for delinquent boys, the novel finds Miss Marple visiting an elderly friend from her own school days--and being plunged into crime when her hostess' stepson is shot dead.

Christie is best known for her fiendishly cunning plots, but in this instance I found the mechanism of the crime somewhat obvious. Still, the novel has other, undeniable charms: a renewed acquaintance with the always entertaining Miss Marple, a memorable cast of characters, and a particularly atmospheric setting. While it will never compare with the likes of A MURDER IS ANNOUNCED or MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS, Christie fans will find it an entertaining one-gulp read.

TVs own Marple reads a Marple mystery

Again we have a good opportunity to see how two different writers adapt for the screen an Agatha Christie mystery. In 1985, Helen Hayes played a very American Miss Marple in "Murder With Mirrors." Of course, better known is the Joan Hickson version that appeared in the USA on Mystery Theatre. Now that same Ms. Hickson reads the original version on a 4-audio cassette boxed set from Audio Partners with the British title "They Do It With Mirrors."
The plot revolves around a home for juvenile delinquents set up by Lewis Serrocold who is married to Carrie Louise, an old school chum of Marple's. The relationships are a bit hard to sort out when one is hearing a tape and cannot turn back a few pages to see who is who, but things get moving when three shots ring out, two behind a closed door and one far off. Murder (but for what reason?), attempted murder (but was it really?), and a little stab at slow poisoning (if that is what it was) complicate things. But by drawing her usual analogies between those concerned and those whom Marple knew long ago, she is able to hit upon the solution.
Unfortunately, I feel this is not one of Christie's better plots--which still makes it a fairly good one!--but the title more or less gives the solution away. I also find that Hickson's voice, so perfect for Marple, is not as flexible as those of other readers in this series and she makes no attempt to act out the various parts. Now and then, but not very often, she does grow a tad hard to understand for a word or two. Still, it makes great listening on long trips or just sitting there on a cold winter's night with a mug of hot something and a good book on the tape deck.

A must-read for marketers and entrepreneurs

Positioning is about how to define your product or entity in an optimal way so as to differentiate it from competitors and drive preferential purchase or use. Ries and Trout argue that positioning has become especially critical for marketers as our society has become increasingly overburdened with communication and advertisements.

I wish I could go back in time after having read this book -- Positioning gave me numerous epiphanies related to companies I have started or worked for. Positioning is a must-read for anyone who works in marketing or business, especially those launching a new product or struggling to hit stride with an existing product.

The book hammers home the point that the only reality that matters with is the perception of your customers. It's the prospect's world-view and interpretation of your product that counts, not yours. And although this book contains outdated examples as it was published over 30 years ago, I didn't feel that this detracted from the core content. Rather, the authors' prophetic and timeless concepts helped reinforce their arguments. Overall, this book helped me move along the path towards critically understanding and evaluating positioning strategies.

My primary criticism of this book is that while Ries and Trout provide a highly practical explanation of how and when to use line extensions, I did not feel as well-armed with practical methodologies for positioning in general. Other than semantic differential, no research strategies or exercises were provided for defining the positioning of an entity. I was somewhat able to fill this gap with material I found online published by Roger Straus. In particular I would recommend looking up Straus's "triangular" strategy, which incorporates rational, affective and relational positioning, to be a great supplement to Positioning.

Outdated but not Useless

Positioning: The Battle for Your Mind, by Al Reis and Jack Trout, is a classic how-to book for marketing with timeless lessons. It wasn't until a ways into the book that I realized how old the book was. Some of the examples used truly date the book. These dated examples may date the concepts, but not their worth. It is interesting to note the successes and failures of companies, politicians, and products predicted in the book and how the history for each played out.

I had not realized how important positioning was in business and ones personal life until reading this. This book was an easy and fun read, but still packed with enlightening information that reigns true despite the changes in the world. It uses history and "current events" to express and better explain theories and practices which can be extraordinarily useful. It also explains what not to do and why.

Though long, and somewhat redundant, their message is clear and heard throughout their book. Various examples assure that every possibility is explained and expounded upon. I highly recommend this book for those beginning in not only advertising or marketing, but any business.

I like this book for its insight into finding and carving out niches in a product market place. The examples that show how to do this are also good for understanding the points. However, some of this book was targeted more towards marketing professionals with large advertisement budgets rather than the small, individual marketer of today. He talks about TV, radio and paper advertising which reveals how outdated the marketing channel suggestions are. I think it is best to take away the core message of this book, but find a modern source about how to apply them to today's marketplace.

Entries give a historical context, and while they do not include detailed IMDB-type information such as cast, crew, or running time, they do list the film’s year of release and director. Places (Warsaw ghetto, Auschwitz), key figures (Adolf Hitler, Adolf Eichmann), and subjects (genocide) are also examined. Topics that have their own entry are in bold throughout. Profiles of mainstream films such as Schindler’s List and The Pianist are included along with documentaries The Sorrow and the Pity and Shoah. The 1978 television miniseries Holocaust: The Story of the Family Weiss is cited as a turning point in the depiction of the Holocaust in popular media. Though not a definitive resource on the history of cinema pertaining to the Holocaust, this volume is a solid starting point for research on the genre or a specific film. Entries include international filmmakers and Holocaust figures and films in various genres (feature films, documentaries, TV presentations) produced from 1940 to 2011. The book begins with a chronology from 1933 to 2011 that showcases events and films. A lengthy introduction explaining the cinematic history is divided by time period. The bulk of the work consists of the well-written, informational entries, arranged alphabetically. Most of the entries deal with specific films and include a plot summary and a paragraph of critical evaluation with some history and comparisons to other films. Other entries cover Holocaust-related terms and include examples of films that fit the topic. Entries on relevant people include a brief biography and related films. Entries range in length from a single paragraph to a page or more; boldface terms within the text refer to other entries, and see also references appear at the end. The book contains black-and-white stills from many of the featured films. A filmography lists all of the films covered in the dictionary, plus others. An extremely extensive bibliography completes the volume; although it is limited to works about cinema and primary works that served as source material for films, it provides researchers with a great deal of additional information. Not only is this title a useful addition to Holocaust-related reference collections, the authors deserve praise for producing a resource that virtually anyone attracted to film and the Holocaust will find interesting. The work begins with a chronology and introduction, both of which aim to place the evolution of Holocaust-related films in historical context. Its core is "The Dictionary," which selectively includes entries on films, filmmakers (e.g., Marcel Oph�ls), and topics (e.g., Adolf Eichmann) that have inspired filmmakers. The range is commendable: documentaries, made-for-television films, and Hollywood blockbusters; both black-and-white and color films; rigorous international coverage; and presentations that range from poignantly personal treatments (e.g., The Pawnbroker) to broadly inclusionary presentations. Whereas the alphabetized "Filmography" (which follows the dictionary) is comprehensive, one might wonder why Robert Reimer and Carol Reimer (both, UNC Charlotte) chose to include dictionary entries for some films (e.g., Mephisto, an excellent film, is a debatable inclusion) while omitting others (e.g., Voyage of the Damned, which portrays the St. Louis voyage). Quibbles aside, however, this historical dictionary is an exceedingly useful reference source that belongs in any reference collection supporting film or Holocaust studies. Useful bibliography. This is one more excellent cinema work from the Historical Dictionary of Literature and The Arts series. The book contains a number of film stills and is well laid out with a good-sized clear font. It will be an excellent source book for students of the cinema and those involved in Jewish studies. Students studying the Second World War, the Nazis, propaganda and how such a complex and harrowing subject was dealt with through the media of cinema and television will also find it valuable.

If they do such a mistake: Palestinian film in the list of films

If they do such a mistake!!!!!!!

In the end of the book where they list films about the holocaust I found a film that is called "the Sons of Eilaboun" by Hisham Zreiq ( [...] ), this film is a Palestinian film about a massacre that the Israeli army committed in a Christian Palestinian village in 1948. So it is a the Palestinian holocaust, and have no place in this book.

So if they did do it deliberately, then they should be ashamed, and if this is a mistake, it shows that his guys are not professionals!!

In any case I would not recommend such a book

About the Author
Kato Masao was born in Fukuoka Japan on the 15th of March 1947. Kato joined Kitani Minoru's go dojo in 1959, In 1964 he became a shodan. In 1973 he was promoted to 8-dan. In 1967 he scored a magnificent tally of 37 wins to only 8 losses and set a record by becoming the first 4-dan to qualify for the Honinbo League. He won his first title by beating Otake in the first Gosei title in 1976. Kato went on to win 46 total titles, fourth most in Japan behind Cho Chikun, Sakata Eio and Kobayashi Koichi. At one point, Kato held four of the top 7 titles: Meijin, Oza, Judan and Gosei. Kato was elected president of the Nihon Ki-in and International Go Federation in early 2004. Under his lead, he eliminated the Oteai, instead introducing new rules to help deal with rank inflation that had occurred over the years. He also increased komi from 5.5 points to 6.5 points and shortened thinking time. Later in the year, Kato fell ill and was hospitalized. He underwent a successful operation on 10 December, but his condition worsened a few weeks later. Kato died on 30 December 2004.

Excellent Go book for the low-kyu player.

Kato's Attack and Kill offers the low-kyu player the insight of the feared professional who earned the name "The Killer." Many books discuss attacks and threats, but this one gives us explicit examples of actual kills, as well as the tesugi essential to effect them. Attack and Kill will help kyu-level players work toward Shodan and solidify their understanding of the balance of power, and will offer Dan-level players a discussion of a topic rarely mentioned elsewhere.
The material is presented well, and the book is enjoyable to read.
