Geothermal Energy: Renewable Energy and the Environment, by William E. Glassley

Historically, cost effective, reliable, sustainable, and environmentally friendly, use of geothermal energy has been limited to areas where obvious surface features pointed to the presence of a shallow local heat source, such as hot springs and volcanoes. However, recent technological advances have dramatically expanded the range and size of viable resources, especially for applications such as modular power generation, home heating, and other applications that can use heat directly. These recent developments have greatly expanded opportunities for utilizing geothermal energy. Reflecting current interest in alternative energy, Geothermal Energy: Renewable Energy and the Environment explores where geothermal energy comes from and how to find it, how it can be accessed, successful applications, and improvements for future uses.

The author reviews the background, theory, power generation, applications, strengths, weaknesses, and practical techniques for implementing geothermal energy projects. He stresses the links between acquisition and consumption and the environment. Packed with real world case studies and practical implementation steps, the book covers geosciences principles, exploration concepts and methods, drilling operations and techniques, equipment needs, and economic and environmental topics. Each chapter includes an annotated list of key sources that provide useful information beyond that contained in the text.

The minor environmental impacts caused by geothermal energy gives it the potential to play an important role in the transition from fossil fuels to more sustainable fuels. Successful deployment, however, requires that the resource be matched to the application being developed. Rigorously covering all aspects of geothermal energy, this book provides up-to-date scientific information that can be used to discern applications and regions best suited for geothermal energy.

Author William E. Glassley was recently interviewed on The Kathleen Show about using geothermal energy to heat and cool our homes.

A Great Introductory Resource
By Brian Bear
Dalton and Seidlhofer have written a good pronunciation introduction for those wishing to tackle this complex and often perplexing language system. The book is mostly theoretical, but never loses sight of the practical side of life.

"Pronunciation" covers aspects of pronunciation that include "the nature of speech sounds", intonation, connected speech, stress, teaching pronunication, concentrating on intonation, concentrating on connected speech and other chapters. Splashed throughout are reader tasks that highlight the points being made in very practical ways. For example, rather than just telling the read what happens in connected speech, they will give you a couple of example utterances to try, having a couple of questions for you to think about, and then deal with the point of it all.

Although not as "sample lesson" orientated as Gerald Kelly's How To Teach Pronunciation (Book with Audio CD), this is definitely a valuable resource to have around. It is exceptionally thorough and gives the reader an excellent overview of the topic. There are plenty of tasks to use in the class when you want to explore this system, but as said, they are not "sample lessons", per se. A very good book by any standard, I think.

Saya seems, from all appearances, to be an ordinary teenage girl suffering from amnesia. Living with a foster family just outside an American military base in Okinawa, Japan, she soon discovers that she is anything but normal. She learns she is an apparently immortal warrior, who has ties dating to ancient Egyptian times if not earlier. For centuries she has been locked in a battle against a race of vampiric creatures known as Chiropterans, monsters that seem intent on destroying all life on Earth.
In an epic tale that crisscrosses the globe from the streets of Japan to Vietnam, Russia, France, England, and ultimately North Carolina and New York City, Saya battles to save the world while searching for the secret of her lost memories

Anime vs. Manga
By paulina
As with the previous volumes of manga created post-tv series, I find the manga to be disappointing. The tone is almost one of parody as the characters are exaggerated in affect and action. The subtle nuances of the television series are disposed of in favor of action and fan service. I imagine this was done to sell the manga to a younger, male crowd who may have found the romantic triangle of Saya, Haji and Solomon too mushy for their tastes. If you are a romantic, you will not enjoy the manga although as a Blood Plus fan, you will appreciate the greater detail to backstory and even some of the differences. For example, (spoiler alert), George Miuyagusuku doesn't die in the manga. He sometimes acts like a fool, though. I didn't like that much. The character of Charles aka Karl is also more developed so if you like that character, the manga will please. All in all, manga is manga and anime is anime. They don't always reflect well on each other. I prefer the animated version, as well as the complex story that is slowly developed over time. The less patient and less romantic will probably disagree. And that's what makes a horse race.

Still horrible...
By Amazon Customer
Think Vol. 1 was bad? This one is worse. So not only are we graced with blatant misogyny and piss-poor story telling and awful characterization, but surprise, surprise! Sexual objectification of not only our heroine Saya, but also Julia and the 14 year old UNDERAGED disabled girl Mui. Again, watch the anime or read the Light Novels. Still 46756256346387x better than this waste of paper.

The saga continues
By VampireNovelFan
More of Saya's story unfolds as her memory returns from her past. The stakes are higher now as her foster brother, Riku, has been kidnapped and she's determined to find him and get him back to safety. Saya ends up working along with the Red Shield, an organization whose been trying to stop the Chiropterans as well.

This manga has Saya traveling to Vietnam, which is good because the change in scenery drives home how this epidemic is expanding. Saya has a lot more on her plate then you're led to believe in the first volume. The action and violence are still there. There isn't as much Kai as in the first novel, but he isn't really a favorite of mine anyway so I didn't miss him. Nothing is taboo in this series as children are subjected to just as much violence and tragedy.

I'm a big Haji fan, so I enjoy seeing him be Saya's rock. They have an underlying bond with each other that builds throughout the series. Unlike volume 1, this volume somewhat combines several episodes from the anime though, again, there are obvious plot differences.

This volume could be a standalone, but since this series is only 5 volumes, it's worth reading consecutively.

Harvard Medical School Improving Memory: Understanding age-related memory loss, by Kirk R. Daffner M.D.

By age 60, more than half of adults have concerns about their memory. However, minor memory lapses that occur with age are not usually signs of a serious neurological disorder, such as Alzheimer's disease, but rather the result of normal changes in the structure and function of the brain. This report describes age-related changes and other causes of memory impairment--and how to distinguish between them. It also explains how and why certain health conditions (such as cardiovascular disease) that become more common with age can impair memory. Side effects from some medications, such as sleep aids, antihistamines, and various pain relievers, may also contribute to memory woes. In such cases, controlling health problems and switching medications often can sustain or improve memory function. You'll also learn about cognitive reserve, which reflects the brain's capacity to withstand damage associated with disease or injury and how to increase it by staying physically and mentally active. The more you use your brain, the stronger it can become--and the longer it can stay strong.

Food Justice (Food, Health, and the Environment), by Robert Gottlieb, Anupama Joshi

In today's food system, farm workers face difficult and hazardous conditions, low-income neighborhoods lack supermarkets but abound in fast-food restaurants and liquor stores, food products emphasize convenience rather than wholesomeness, and the international reach of American fast-food franchises has been a major contributor to an epidemic of "globesity." To combat these inequities and excesses, a movement for food justice has emerged in recent years seeking to transform the food system from seed to table. In Food Justice, Robert Gottlieb and Anupama Joshi tell the story of this emerging movement.

A food justice framework ensures that the benefits and risks of how food is grown and processed, transported, distributed, and consumed are shared equitably. Gottlieb and Joshi recount the history of food injustices and describe current efforts to change the system, including community gardens and farmer training in Holyoke, Massachusetts, youth empowerment through the Rethinkers in New Orleans, farm-to-school programs across the country, and the Los Angeles school system's elimination of sugary soft drinks from its cafeterias. And they tell how food activism has succeeded at the highest level: advocates waged a grassroots campaign that convinced the Obama White House to plant a vegetable garden. The first comprehensive inquiry into this emerging movement, Food Justice addresses the increasing disconnect between food and culture that has resulted from our highly industrialized food system.

From Booklist
From seed to supermarket, every facet of food production is a potential target for abuse and exploitation. Farm workers toil under inhuman conditions for low wages and no benefits, while food-processing plants operate with little regard for safety or cleanliness. Without access to proper grocery stores, many urban residents find themselves in the midst of “food deserts” that force them to rely on fast-food chains and convenience marts for a diet that is high in calories and low in nutrients. With their massive purchasing power, megastores not only drive local and regional grocers out of business, they also contribute to the failure of independent farmers already struggling to compete with agribusiness conglomerates. Meticulously chronicling the genesis of the deteriorating state of food production, distribution, and consumption, Gottlieb, a professor of urban and environmental policy, and Joshi, codirector of the National Farm to School Network, also highlight inspiring and innovative success stories at both grassroots and high-profile levels, and offer attainable examples of ways consumers, farmers, manufacturers, merchants, and legislators can correct system-wide injustices. --Carol Haggas

Review

Food Justice makes a highly valuable contribution to the movement for food justice.

(Christof Bernau Human Ecology)

Food Justice is an eye-opening treatment of an important subject that has something to offer every reader, and will prove especially useful to those with a keen interest in learning about, and perhaps changing, where their food comes from.

(Contemporary Sociology)

This book is essential reading for scholars interested in the connections between food and the environment.

(Kathleen A. Brosnan Environmental History)

The authors excel…in presenting a well-rounded picture of how food justice -- and more prevalent food injustices -- touches our daily lives.

(Megan C. Bourke Policy Perspectives)

An important contribution to the food policy literature that comes at a critical moment in the food justice movement. Gottlieb and Joshi pull no punches. Their point of view, that the dominant agroindustrial food system is inherently unjust to farm workers, consumers (including our children), and the communities that suffer from the external costs of food production, comes through loud and clear.

(Nevin Cohen, Eugene Lang College, New School for Liberal Arts)

Food Justice is about who grows our food, how it is grown, where it is grown, who gets to eat, and the pleasure and celebration of eating food that is good food, clean food, fair food. Food Justice tells us that growing and eating food are political acts that challenge a system that is neither good, nor clean, nor fair. Read it!

(Carlo Petrini, founder, Slow Food International)

Food Justice is exactly what is needed to understand what is happening in today's food movement. The book explains how movement participants advocate in different ways for a more ethical food system and examines dozens of groups working for change at the local, national, and international levels. It should inspire all of us to advocate for healthier diets for people and the planet, more humane treatment of farm animals, and more supportive policies for farmers, farm workers, and rural communities.

(Marion Nestle, Paulette Goddard Professor in the Department of Nutrition, Food Studies, and Public Health, New York University, author of Food Politics)

While their pragmatic and wide-ranging approach to food justice might not be appreciated by environmental purists, the authors' stock of common-sense solutions and genuine concern makes Food Justice an interesting and authoritative read. Their central argument -- that the approach to transforming the way we eat needs to be more integrated -- is compelling and certainly worth considering. Unfortunately injustices in the way food is produced and consumed won't go away over night. But if, as Food Justice advocates, we work together and focus on community-based initiatives, then we are on the right track.

get informed and inspired

I work with the authors and had seen some outlines and early drafts, so I knew that the book was going to cover some interesting ground.

But I had a chance to read the book in more detail over the Thanksgiving break and was impressed with how it blends analysis of what's wrong with how we grow, sell, and eat food; with ideas for fixing these problems and stories about how people around the country (and world) are making progress towards food justice. The book is nicely organized following the cycle of food from seed to plate. It travels from the ultra-local (school gardens and neighborhood activism) to global trade.

I also like how 'food justice' bridges a gap between 'foodies'- people concerned with local food, slow food, organics etc who have usually been assumed to be primarily middle class folks with time and money to dedicate to figuring out where there food came from; and lower income people organizing for access to healthy food and for decent jobs in the food economy. The book opens with an account of youth in New Orleans and reminds us that farm workers were among the first to draw attention to the costs and benefits of the food system.

There are good books out there about healthy eating, about the problems associated with industrial agriculture and with fast food, and about a DIY/ grow-it-yourself local food perspective. Food Justice distinguishes itself by weaving these threads together and by reminding us that those with the least often do the most to ensure good food for all.

Great Book!
By Julia Govis
This book manages to explain very eloquently what events have led us to experience our current food system issues in a very logical and interesting way. It outlines the many interrelated aspects involved in the system and clearly shows that there is not one simple "fix"for the currently dysfunctional and unjust system. The good news is, that this book also makes clear that it is in fact possible for us to change this situation, through public awareness and action. I highly recommend this book!
