This full-size (81/2" x 11") paperback book written by Gavin D. S. Harper was a fun read for this longtime rocketeer (since 1966). True to its title, the book is focused on various aspects of model rocketry and continually emphasizes safety. Even with fourteen years in HPR, I found the material interesting and informative. The projects and information described in the book vary from simple to quite complex. Projects include basic model rocketry, staging, clustering, launch systems, recovery systems, wind tunnels, payloads, and more. The work is well illustrated with both pictures and schematics. In addition to step-by-step instructions, there are good technical tips, and it is all written in an easy-to-follow order. There are also numerous other features in addition to "build" projects. A brief discussion of rocketry history starts the book, ranging from the invention of black powder to the U.S. manned moon landing. Real rocket science interspersed in each chapter simply but accurately explains much of the physics of rocketry. The more technical aspects of our hobby are presented toward the end of the book. These features include rocket math, flight computers, and camera rockets. This book works well with fun parent/child activities. Simple motors can be put together from 35mm film cans with propellant components such as vinegar and Alka-Seltzer tablets. More complex motors using hydrochloric acid with hydrogen peroxide are also detailed. The wind-tunnel segment was very practical, and I wish that I'd had this available in my younger years when designing my early models. Chapter 5 is a particularly valuable section for the beginner. There are descriptions and pictures of theconstruction techniques of all parts of a simple model rocket. It then goes on to cover multistage rockets, boost-gliders, cone rockets, and flying saucers. Probably the most difficult part of successful rocketry, whether it be of model or mid- or high-power, is the recovery system. Chapter 6 has a very good series of sections on various recovery methods and even includes a descent-rate table. The end of Chapter 6 includes articles on constructing strobes for night launches. Chapter 7 covers launching of model rockets. Again, some very good parent/child projects are described in word and illustration. Several practical launch controllers and pads are described, including construction of a tower launcher. More advanced items, such as clustering and igniters, are also detailed. The latter chapters discuss more advanced subjects, such as rocket math, aerial photography (still and movie), Barrowman stability, altitude determination, and flight computers. Some of the features I found most interesting were the items about making black powder and the explanation of nozzles and aerodynamics. The book is an easy read in both the length of each feature and the writing style. Do not expect any HPR information, simply enjoy the book for what it is: a good beginners guide that also is interesting to the experienced rocketeer. Outstanding Book of Rocketry Ideas

I volunteer at our local school, mentoring a science and technology after school program using model rocketry as a learning tool. Being an avid hobby rocketeer for more than 40 years, I've decided to broaden my own horizons, as well.

While looking for material to serve both interests, I stumbled across "50 Model Rocket Projects for the Evil Genius," by Gavin D.J. Harper. I was familiar with some of the other similarly titled books, but oddly, none of the local bookstores carry this title, so I ordered it on Amazon.com.

Mr. Harper has taken an already exciting hobby and said, "Hey, if you think that's fun, try this!"

The name suggests this book is not written for the absolute beginner, true, but even though you do need experience to construct some of the more advanced projects, Mr. Harper has a writing style that anyone should be able to follow along with and get an idea of the skills they should be developing. By the same token, if you're an evil genius, you'll find a plethora of ideas that you probably never thought of, or that needed updating.

And as an instructor, you'll find another great resource of how you might share information and inspire your students to be competing in various arenas. Whether it's a science fair, industrial arts, or even an international category, this book definitely has ideas for some very competitive projects with enough information and detailed plans to get the project accomplished. And, where they'll shine, and what the competition should be about, is demonstrating their mastery of understanding and skills.

In short, Mr. Harper's "50 Model Rocket Projects for the Evil Genius" should inspire our children to learn, and give us old guard something new to experiment with; either way, it'll be a welcomed addition to anyone's library.

Great way to spend time with kids.

This is a great resource book. The projects follow a pretty easy progression, from very easy and basic to more advanced complicated. My favorite part is where it start to show you how to build your own model rocket. As well it includes variations that include different science equipment like altimeters and cameras for recording flight. This book shows you how to build all these things. It shows you how model rocketry it great for teaching the basics for all kinds of engineering like design, electrical, aerospace, chemical, and even some computer programming. Great a way to spend quality time with kids while building something which will inspire them with fire and smoke.

Incomplete instuctions.

although I tried justifying the cost of the book by finding sections of the book "helpful", this was offset by unfinished instructions. Specifically, in chapter 6 project 18, 'Build a strobe beacon'. The author instructs you to disassemble a flash camera down to the circuit board. Although he states that the circuit board will be modified he stops short of instructing you how! As for the books cover title description, Mr. Harper, regarding the projects therein; they are not 'Evil'(just lacking in creativity) and anyone with a moderate amount of intelligence can accomplish these projects (except for #18 which you failed to complete). Now if I can suggest a "truly" Evil Genius book, that has complete instructions with twice as many projects, check-out Brad Graham and Kathy McGowan's books. Some stimulating and unique writing worth the cost.

The 'Perfect' blend of mystery and scandal

There was a time, back in the seventh grade, when Alison "Ali" DiLaurentis, Hanna Marin, Spencer Hastings, Aria Montgomery, and Emily Fields ruled Rosewood Day school. Together, these five girls determined what, and who, was hot, and what, and who, were so yesterday. They were the girls everyone wanted to be - especially Ali - and the ones every guy wanted to date. Even Hanna, Spencer, Aria, and Emily felt jealousy towards the perfect Ali. Still, the five girls spent every waking moment together, trading secrets, gossiping about their classmates, and hanging at the mall where they shopped 'til they dropped, their parents credit cards in tow. But then, everything changed. At the end of seventh grade, Ali suddenly up and disappeared without a trace, and each of the girls slowly went their own ways. That is, until "A" came into the picture, threatening to reveal each of their deepest, darkest secrets; and an unlikely discovery was made, that of Ali's body, buried under the cement in her old backyard. Suddenly, it became evident, that secrets don't always stay buried.

After Ali disappeared, Hanna Marin dropped Spencer, Aria, and Emily, and picked up a new friend in the dorky Mona Vanderwaal. Together, they vowed to drop the extra weight, and become the most beautiful girls in school. Now, at the age of sixteen, they have both accomplished just that. But they want more. With Mona's Sweet Seventeen quickly approaching, there's no doubt in their minds that this won't be the bash of the century. But thanks to "A," there's trouble a-brewing between the two besties. Trouble that could set them at odds with each other forever. Spencer Hastings knew that it was wrong to steal her sister, Melissa's, essay for economics class. But it was so perfect, and there's no harm in a little fib now and then. Unfortunately, the essay has been entered into the Golden Orchid competition, throwing Spencer into the midst of semi-fame. Spencer just wants to ignore the congratulations surrounding her, but "A" is making that difficult with the constant threats of revealing her wrong-doing. Emily Fields knows that being gay would make her family hate her for life. She also knows that, if she doesn't report "A" to the police, she, or one of her old friends, could end up dead. She just never realized that coming forward with information would make her the target of "outing" her to the whole town. Aria Montgomery thought that her troubles were over when her family moved to Iceland for three years. But, upon return, her father, Byron, continued the affair he had left behind with his student, Meredith; and, due to the fact that Aria knew all about it, her mother wants nothing to do with her. Luckily, she has Ezra to run to. Unfortunately, with "A" around, he may not be able to claim the title as her "knight in shining armor" for much longer. As if dealing with "A" weren't enough, of course, there's some peeping tom-like nutcase running around the pretentious Philadelphia town of Rosewood peering into windows, and creeping everyone out; and the girls think that the newfound stalker may somehow be related to "A."

Not many book series get better with each installment. However, with Sara Shepard's PRETTY LITTLE LIARS, the series can be comparable to a fine wine - it only gets better with age. Or, in this case, with each new addition to the collection. PERFECT is no exception. From page one, I was hooked, and found myself incapable of putting down this amazing new novel. Hanna is still my favorite character. Her struggles with an eating disorder, and feelings of loneliness, as she finds herself on the outs with her superficial best friend, Mona, truly make you feel emotional towards her; while Aria's current situation regarding her tumultuous relationship with her mother, Ella, her difficulties with her father, Byron, and her growing feelings for her English teacher, Ezra, only work to invoke the same feelings. While Spencer isn't necessarily stealing Melissa's boyfriends, as she was in the previous installments, the new insight she gains into her childhood and current lifestyle thanks to a few sessions from her new therapist, Dr. Evans, are extremely gripping, and hard to ignore. And Emily...well, the fact that she's suddenly faced with kissing Maya goodbye, or just plain kissing her, is enough to throw her off her game. While PRETTY LITTLE LIARS and FLAWLESS were slightly more light and fluffy; PERFECT brings in an extremely emotionally charged storyline that leaves you on the edge of your seat from start to finish, contemplating what will happen in the fourth, and final chapter of the saga. The PERFECT blend of mystery and scandal.

Shocking!

The third Pretty Little Liars is shocking. Practically every part will stun you. A is even more sneaky and evil in this book- and has several mistakes, and flops, up her sleeve. Hanna, Aria, Spencer, and Emily really begin to see who A really is. The mystery surrounding Ali's actions before her death are slowly being revealed as is her killer. This is typical, wonderful PLL, but even better. The girls are even more real in this book. It's hard to put into words how much I really loved this book without telling what happened!!!! It still seems a little early to yell about everything that happened, and everything that A did to all of them!!!! We've been warned for two books what might happen if the girls didn't do what A said. In Perfect, we find out exactly what she has in store for all them. Can Emily and Maya's secret be kept safely in the closet? Can Spencer recall the night Ali disappeared in full detail? What about Aria and Ezra? The mystery of A is not solved, but something else very important is. Some people have said the books have no depth to them, but I don't understand how anyone can say that anymore after Perfect. Perfect is incredibly suspenseful, and if you're prone to paranoia, be warned. Your curtains and blinds are going to bo closed for a while.

Worm is starting to turn...

After breezing through the previous 2 books in this series I was eager to start the next volume. I ended up finishing it in one night, just like I did with the other two. The books are just that good.

This volume finds all of the girls starting to really feel the negative effects of their actions as well as feeling the true wrath of the mysterious A. Aria's getting kicked out of her house, but luckily her new boyfriend Shaun is there to pick up the pieces. With love like that there's no way she could still be lusting after her teacher beau, right? Then Spencer's starting to panic because not only is she nominated for an award that she doesn't deserve, but now she's discovering that she has a nasty little habit that her parents never told her about. Emily's slowly starting to realize the truth about herself. Too bad that A's intent on kicking her out of the closet projectile-style. Then there's Hanna. Her BFF Mona hates her and her dad still hasn't called her after what her nasty step-sis to be did. She's also a step closer to finding out who A is- too bad that A has no intention on giving up that particular secret just yet.

I love this series. I never thought I'd get into a mean girl series, but I did. The previous books were a little rushed & the families were a little overly mean, but now we're seeing more characters & families that aren't as horrendous as our fab 4's families are. We're still no closer to discovering who A is, although it's fun to guess. My only lament about the book is that the way I'm breezing through them, I'll finish them before the series is finished. (Which means I'll have to wait for the next volume to come out rather than get to read it right away!)

Like in my previous reviews I will warn parents that there is sex and some violence in this series. However this is the 3rd volume, so I would hope that parents would be aware of the content by this point! Still, some parents will still want to read the books with their kids & discuss it afterwards. The books are fun to read & it's a great way to connect with your kids as you talk about the mature themes & puzzle over who A could be.

It's an acquired taste...

My girlfriend and I just love this cookbook. She takes care of the actual cooking part and I am responsible for gathering the ingredients. We were delighted to find the ethnic food sections and are exploring the Asian cuisine this week. I gotta tell you though the Cream of Sumyoungguy is not for the faint of heart. It called for 1/2 cup of the err, special sauce. She said it was divine but honestly, I was just too tired to eat.

UPDATE: So it's been several months and I need to update my review. Because the book doesn't have any specific disclaimers I think it's important that readers be warned of potential issues... The first "issue" I experienced was Forearm Imbalance. My co-workers started noticing that my right forearm was considerably more defined and at least 3/4" larger than my left forearm. It's not like Popeye big but it's still pretty embarrassing. I tried some, shall we say, "load balancing" by switching arms for the collection process but my I find my left arm is just inattentive, always in a hurry and not tuned into my needs. Inevitably, I have to switch back to the right arm to get the job done.

The second "issue" is I have recently been diagnosed with Low T. Now, I'm not gonna come right out and say this book as caused my condition but darn it, if there were health risks with gathering ingredients for this book there needs to be a warning label. I mean, even my aspirin bottle says "Do not exceed xx number of pills per day." Can you -overcook- with this cookbook? We need to demand answers. I was extremely close to investing in a food truck and taking some of these dishes (and a few I came up with) to work sites and carnivals all over my state. I had already lined up several work-from-home employees to supplement my ingredient supply line. I just can't in good conscience ask these young men to work 6, 7, 8 hours per day if there is even the slightest chance of adverse effects.

So the bottom line is this: Use this book with caution. Use your head(s). Moderation in all things.

Never buy used!

I learned this lesson the hard way - my used copy arrived all tattered and torn and many of the pages were stuck together. My grandma still loved the gift, but she complains that some of the recipes are too salty for her.

Having stepped in numerous cow pies over the years in my attempts to resolve people conflicts, I GREATLY appreciate a thorough, valuable guide to getting it right. I have found this to be a great reference book as I continue to practice the sensible, sensitive and solid advice offered in this book.

Best "Boundaries" Follow-Up So Far!

Many people would think by now the authors had gotten all the mileage possible from the "Boundaries" theme. After writing a best-selling book by the same title and a number of follow-ups, surely there is nothing left to cover. Cloud and Townsend here however, hit another home run by providing precious insights on how to have difficult conversations with the people around us, confronting others with the truth in Christian love. I won't go into detail with all the many positive aspects of this title -- I just realize as a pastor who has dealt with difficult people situations for over 25 years, this book is a God-send. I wish I had read it years ago.

I've read all of the "Boundaries" titles that build upon the original, and this one is the best of them. If you haven't read "Boundaries", read it then read this book. If you have read "Boundaries" then this volume is the one to read next. Obviously, I recommend it highly.

Easy Confrontation!

And you thought there wasn't any such thing as "easy confrontation". That's what we thought, but found confronting others can be not only easy, but also very peaceful and successful. Why get angry, look foolish, and get nothing settled when you can learn to confront people and situations as they occur in a way you're bound to be most satisfied with. Stop going home and wishing you'd said this or that. Learn what to say, when to say it, and how to be most successful with problem people and situations. Then you can go home satisfied with what you said and how things were handled, and get on with your life without looking back.
