I am a voice teacher at KPCA and every single one of our voice students has a copy of this fantastic book! It is a wonderful resource for voice/music teachers and singers. I love hearing about students teaching and singing the songs in cannon with their family and friends. I only wish it were spiral bound, but it's worth a trip to the printers to pay the $4 to get it bound so that it lays flat.

Tim Walden took over Walden’s Photography from his father in 1980, taking the studio in an entirely different direction when they developed their trademark “Relationship” Black and White Fine Art portraiture.

This is a nice book to provide inspirational ideas for portraits emotionally linking more than one subject. Tim provides his lighting formula, which is used repeatedly, as well as his insights about various nuances he considered with the various example portraits. Want your 11YO to read more? Creepy photos & swear words!

SPOILER FREE REVIEW - We are constantly encouraging our 11 year old to read more. Until recently she would only flip through magazines on occasion, or pick up a joke book with short one liners. It took a lot of prodding to get her interested in reading a novel. We would go to a bookstore and suggest dozens of books while trying to make each one sound as exciting as possible.

This book was one of the first books SHE mentioned wanting to read on her own. We jumped in the car and raced off to the book store to see if we could capitalize on her "read all of the books mood" once she flipped through the book she was hooked in... inside the store! We wanted to order it on amazon, so we negotiated the two day wait for shipping with her by offering to buy buying all three books in the series. She agreed.

Some people may have an issue with this book's language or somewhat sketchy subject matter being appropriate for children, but honestly... She is 11. It's nothing she hasn't heard by now. If I am completely honest- With as much effort as we have put into encouraging her to read over the years, if she asked us to buy her a copy of Helter Skelter I might seriously consider it. Mom might not, but I would.

as if contemplating how best to eat your soul stood out like a corpse ...

I confess I got this book solely on account of its cover. The creepy, black and white photograph of a (very children-of-the-corn looking) girl, standing stock still, staring directly at the camera, as if contemplating how best to eat your soul stood out like a corpse at a holiday party. And the title? How could I resist? I plucked the book from the shelves and brought it home. Then (as you already know, if you read my post from a few days ago), I got distracted (things were shiny), and the book languished on my shelf. Then low and behold, the book will soon be a movie--directed by Tim Burton no less--and I didn't even want to look at the previews without reading the book first.

Miss Peregrine's is a young adult novel, but one that transcends the genre and is enjoyable even for those of us who have left high school far in the past. The best books in the genre (think Harry Potter) feature young adult leading characters and high school age problems, but also rise above the mundane to speak to the problems of a bigger adult world. The less enjoyable books in the genre (sparkly vampires *cough*) leave you wondering if you might have enjoyed the book when you were thirteen, but fairly confident you were never that insipid (though, obviously, all teenagers are insipid by nature).
Miss Peregrine's is one of the better books in the genre. Following the death of his grandfather, sixteen year old Jacob finds out that the fairy stories his grandfather told him as a child--about a magical island inhabited by children with paranormal abilities--may not have been just stories after all. Jacob sets off to learn the truth about the island with its mysterious house of peculiar children, all watched over by a bird who smokes a pipe.
The story is accompanied by photographs throughout the book, all black and white, with that particular creepy vintage vibe you get if you google search "scary Easter bunny". The pictures are all quite striking, and serve to add to the atmosphere of the book. When you learn that all these photos are actual vintage photographs (most unaltered), collected by the author, it adds to the creepy vibe (what were those people doing?) rather than detracts from it. The book is largely an adventure story suffused with all the creepy atmosphere an ancient, fog-shrouded island off the coast of Wales can deliver. There are a few scary/creepy/violent moments, but these are generally around the level of the dementors in the Harry Potter novels (as, after all, this is still a YA novel, creepy atmosphere not withstanding).

In all, this is a great read, and a fine example of a YA novel not only accessible for adults, but enjoyable as well. The characters are interesting and generally well done, and the backdrops, first of Florida, and then the Island are fully realized and contribute well to the tone of the book. I enjoyed my time with Miss Peregrine's and can't wait to read the second book in the series.

I do, however, reserve judgement on the movie version.

Should have done more with less

While I enjoyed his writing for a while, I found the plot to be rather slow-going and the narration to actually take too long to get to the point. I think its about halfway through the book the main character learns what we all knew all along, which is such a sad and unfortunate way to write that it makes the rest of the novel drag on. Instead, he should have refocused the story around learning more about the peculiar children, giving more depth to their world, and really creating the villain we hear about but don't come to know until about the last half or so of book.

It's not that this is a bad book, it's just not a very straight forward one and the way he writes doesn't make up for this.

This is a great book. Dying to self is what is holding back the success of every christian that is not seeing results. After this revelation I am once again on fire to see the supernatural in my life. Guillermo Maldonado is all about the supernatural power of God and he knows what he is talking about.

Storing's The Complete Anti-Federalist is to provide students of American political thought, especially those concerned with the American founding, with a one-volume companion to The Federalist. The writings and speeches have been chosen on the basis of the importance of their arguments and their prominence in the ratification campaign.

About the Author
Herbert J. Storing (1928-77), who spent most of his professional life at the University of Chicago, was, at the time of his death, Robert K. Gooch Professor of Government and the director of the Program on the Presidency, White Burkett Miller Center of Public Affairs, University of Virginia. Murray Dry, who prepared this abridgment, is the Charles A. Dana Professor of political science at Middlebury College.

AN ABRIDGEMENT OF STORING'S SEVEN-VOLUME COLLECTION OF WRITINGS

Herbert J. Storing (1928-1977) was a professor of Constitutional History and Law at the University of Virginia. This book is the Introduction to his 1977 complete seven-volume set of letters, pamphlets, and speeches in The Complete Anti-Federalist. The Introduction to his seven-volume set is also available separately: What the Anti-Federalists Were For: The Political Thought of the Opponents of the Constitution by Storing, Herbert J. published by University Of Chicago Press Paperback.

One writer notes, "The senate, the great efficient body in this plan of government, is constituted on the most unequal principles. The smallest state in the union has equal weight with the great states of Virginia, Massachusetts, or Pannsylvania..." (Pg. 19) One writer criticizes the power of the judges: "(T)here is no power above them that can control their decisions, or correct their errors... in many cases their power is superior to that of the legislature." (Pg. 184) Another observes, "The powers of Congress under the new constitution, are complete and unlimited over the PURSE and the SWORD, and are perfectly independent of, and supreme over, the state governments." (Pg. 210)

Another laments, "The non-attendance of eight or nine men, who were appointed members of the convention, I shall ever consider as a very unfortunate event to the United States. Had they attended, I am pretty clear, that the result of the convention would not have had that strong tendency to aristrocracy now discernible in every part of the plan." (Pg. 37) A writer suggests, "It is not possible to collect a set of representatives, who are acquainted with all parts of the continent. Can you find men in Georgia who are acquainted with the situation in New Hampshire?" (Pg. 354)

A writer argues, "A free republic will never keep a standing army to execute its laws. It must depend upon the support of its citizens." (Pg. 115) Another argues in favor of a Bill of Rights, "Ought not a government, vested with such extensive and indefinite authority, to have been restricted by a declaration of rights?" (Pg. 122)

This abridgement is an excellent and broad introduction to the actual writings of the Anti-Federalists.

A great accomplice to the Federalist papers

Sure, it is abridged, but perhaps not all of us have the time to read all 7 volumes.

I think it is pretty important that you read both sides of the argument (get a copy of the federealist papers as well, I got this one: 1441413049 There are strong reasons both for and against a strong federal government rather than a weaker one where states have most of the power.

It is really quit enlightening to see both sides of the argument. Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Patrick Henry are some of the most recognized names of the time, and they were all anti-federalists. Why were they against the constitution?

1) Too much power to the federal gov, at the expense of states
2) Executive branch was too powerful
3) The government could maintain an army even when not at war (military industrial complex ring a bell, anyone?)
4) "Necessary and proper" or elastic clause gave congress way too much power - seems like our congress today is doing much more than "necessary and proper" to use their enumerated powers

I'd have say at this point in time, seeing what has become of our federal government, the anti-federalists were right. Although I haven't read other editions, from what I have read of what others have to say, Herbert Storing's version in terms of unabridged is unrivaled. Seems like even the abridged version is quite good relative to other editors (from reviews I have read this seems to be the case).

This abridged version is good - but Storing's unabridged version is much better

I think that a reading of the Federalist would not lead to the conclusion that the United States is merely a league and that its bonds are not merely commercial, even though I grant you that etymologically "Federal" comes from the Latin for "league" or "compact" and also that the U.S. Constitution is a "compact". Nevertheless, the founders were concerned that a mere league (or treaty) would not be able to accomplish the ends of union. With the U.S. federal pact, there is a sharing of sovereignty and a contract between the peoples of the respective States as sovereign entities. Essentially, the people in each state agrees to assign (divide) the governmental exercise of that sovereignty between two entities - a state government and a federal one.

So the federal government is empowered as much as the state one directly from the sovereignty residing in the people of each individual state. The Articles of Confederation was closer to being a mere "league" since it was a contract between governments. (See Madison, Federalist 43, where he says, "A compact between independent sovereigns, founded on ordinary acts of legislative authority, can pretend to no higher validity than a league or treaty between the parties.") The Articles were ratified by the respective state legislatures and not directly by the people. So at least in that respect it was more like a treaty (even though it also transcended the limits of a treaty, but I don't have time to go into that).

The Constitution, on the other hand, was ratified by the respective peoples - such that it goes beyond the level of a mere treaty or league. This is why, when the Southern States seceded in the 19th century, they did so by calling conventions and letting their people vote on the articles of secession, effectively withdrawing by the same process that they came in. A legislative vote to withdraw from the Union would have been null and void since the original Constitutional contract was made directly with the people in each state acting in their "highest sovereign capacity" (as Madison says in the Federalist).

Rather than being simply a league, it is a people of peoples in a manner of speaking, sovereignty being shared in its exercise (and only in its exercise, or "operation" as Madison termed it) on a "national" level and sovereignty residing "ultimately" and originally in the people in the individual states, one by one, who are the parties to the Constitutional Contract (see article VII of the Constitution, that it is a Constitution "between the States" and Madison's reply in the Virginia Convention, as well as Federalist 39. For more information on this, I suggest a careful reading of the Federalist, especially number 39 by Madison.)

"On examining the first relation, it appears, on one hand, that the Constitution is to be founded on the assent and ratification of the people of America, given by deputies elected for the special purpose; but, on the other, that this assent and ratification is to be given by the people, not as individuals composing one entire nation, but as composing the distinct and independent States to which they respectively belong. It is to be the assent and ratification of the several States, derived from the supreme authority in each State, the authority of the people themselves. The act, therefore, establishing the Constitution, will not be a national, but a federal act." - Madison, Federalist 39

Thus, the federal government we see today operates on principles completely at odds with the Constitution. The tail now wags the dog, the federal government being the tail and the sovereignty of the people being the dog, the source of the tail's very life. The dog can live without the tail, but the tail cannot live without the dog. And yet the federal government acts as if all sovereignty came from it originally and not from the people, as if it needs no authorization for its actions in the Constitution, as if its judges can boss around the people of the United States.

One final note - Storing's Anti Federalist is a wonderful resource. I, however, have made use of the unabridged version, so I can't really not recommend this edition. However, I endorse the complete unabridged edition, despite the price. But I would guess that this, like other abridgments, is useful for a beginning student or someone who doesn't currently have the resources to buy the complete version. But the serious student of the founding would do well to buy the unabridged version. I have rated this 5 stars regardless because the book is good in itself compared to the other abridged versions available.

A pleasant group of Christmas based Regency short stories.

This was an enjoyable Regency anthology built around the Christmas season. However, as is common with anthologies the stories were not all equal. The best story was Carla Kelly's "The Christmas Ornament". Olivia and James, were refreshingly unlike the typical Regency couple, especially James, whose shyness and absent-minded professor personality was truly winning. You could just picture a young Jimmy Stewart or Hugh Grant playing the character. Of the five stories this was the one that I wish had been a full-length novel. My second favorite was Edith Layton's "The Hounds of Heaven", which was full of humor and the true spirit of the Christmas season, despite having the least amount of Christmas "trappings" in the group. Again, a charming hero and a sweet and different plot twist. The only drawback for me was that Helena, the heroine, was not fully drawn-out, probably as a result of the limitations of the short-story format. Barbara Metzger's "Three Good Deeds" and Elisabeth Fairchild's "Felicity's Forfeit" were both pleasant Regency fare. Both stories managed to fit a great deal of detail and some originality into their short frameworks. The only story I didn't enjoy was Allison Lane's "Second Chance". The hero, Jeremy, was actually quite attractive, but I could not warm up to the overly dramatic plot, and found Alice annoyingly self-pitying rather than tragic as she was obviously meant to be. It's hard to enjoy a romance when you only like half of the couple. All five stories featured very charming and well-drawn male leads, and in fact most of the stories were told from their points of view, which I enjoy, since I read romances for the heroes. Overall, a nice group, which Regency fans should enjoy, and which does get you in a pre-holiday spirit.

Delightful Christmas Romp; Stand-out Reading

I enjoy regency anthologies for those days when I just want to read a quick and fun story. The Christmas ones are usually the most delightful especially since I love the holidays!

As with most anthologies, one or two stories stand out and I tend to read those over and over. In this grouping, Carla Kelly's "The Christmas Ornament," and Elizabeth Fairchild's "Felicity's Forfeit" were the two that captured my heart! Both had unusual and wonderful female lead characters.

"Livy" (Olivia) in "The Christmas Ornament" was intelligent, yet filled with common sense and compassion. She was not only able to express herself well but bring the shy, bookish "Jemmy" (James) out of his shell. The many secondary characters were well fleshed out even in this short story. James father advising him that "I have often suspected she (Olivia) is even more intelligent than you," and "Take her seriously as you would any man ... learned that from your mother." The outrageous comments that came out of James regarding Olivia - "You smell remarkably like a biscuit." I loved his professor ways!!! But will he lose her to another - an Adonis, rich and sophisticated with an eye to changing Olivia. Or will Olivia trust her father (who had a hand at matchmaking) and her own instincts?

Felicity of "Felicity's Forfeit" was a wonderful and different female lead (from America's south) and Bingham Kirby was our equally honorable male lead. Forced by the loss of his father's fortune, he must marry an heiress. Lost fortune is the key - the money was actually hidden for safekeeping by his forgetful father who makes vague references to wood and leaves when telling them where the money is. To choose a bride, Bingham hosts a holiday gathering which includes many wealthy young women. The reader is drawn into the Christmas fun and games. And Bingham's kindness shows as he invites the penniless vicar's daughters and their American cousin to join in the fun. But can there be a happily ever after? Bingham is ever mindful of his duty and a penniless American is not on his bride list!

The other stories were notable, but not standouts to me. I enjoyed "Three Good Deeds" and loved the dog in "The Hounds of Heaven." Allison Lane's "Second Chance" was a dark, disturbing tale, more like a sad pioneer historical then a regency. I found it depressing!

But this book is worth having and re-reading. A keeper for me.

For The Most Part, Great Stories!

I could have written both of the above reviews for this book, as I agree with them both. I very much enjoyed four of the five stories, but as mentioned already "Second Chance" by Allison Lane was dreary, depressing and sadly un-Christmasy. The main character, Alice, was not even that likeable. Skip this one story and enjoy the others. Frankly, I wish all four had been written as entire books in themselves, as I found each to be thoroughly charming.

Compilation of Recipe Components Only, no Full Recipes

I purchased this publication based on the descriptions and videos offered on the Vilbo and So Good Magazine web sites. Take note:
"In one unique volume we have included a complete index of all the recipes published in the first eight volumes of sogood.. magazine."
"Not only does it include a compilation of all the recipes (cakes, dessert plates, petit fours...) but also their components."
"Ultimately, this great collection from sogood.. magazine enables you to: Access all the recipes from sogood.. magazine in one single volume,
Enjoy those recipes from volumes that were previously sold-out"

Unfortunately, this publication contains only COMPONENT RECIPES, not FULL recipes. For example, an entremet (French dessert cake) is composed of different elements -- say, a biscuit, a mousse, a jelly, glaze and decorations. This book contains the recipes of these individual elements alone, but it does not contain the recipe for the assembled cake. So, what this book is, is a "component recipe collection."

I have contacted the publisher regarding this issue, as it seems to contradict the descriptions that appear on the web sites and their Youtube video. Here is an excerpt from the reply I received:
"In So Good Recipes you can find all the recipes of every creation but you have them in their individual components... The complete recipes of every dessert, cake, or other creations appear in each [corresponding] issue of So Good."

Silly, really, because, as the publisher admits, they are all out of print. You can look through the Index by Chefs, and tag each component recipe that appear in the same issue, and then take guess as to how those components are combined into a single creation. If your intention is to recreate or test the full recipes contributed by the chefs featured, you will need to search for an out-of-print copy of the magazine to find the full recipe. Personally I find that there is a great void created by omitting the Mother Recipes and final assembly instructions.

Overall, for me, this recipe collection fails to deliver on its promise of delivering "all recipes from the magazine in a single volume." My only consolation is that the $30 price tag is not super expensive, for the number of component recipes you get. But the buyer must be aware that that's all they will find in this book... component recipes. Would I still buy this book if I had known about the omissions? Probably not. The component recipes really are for the most part very basic. If you are a professional pastry chef crafting in the French style, it is likely you already have many of these component recipes in your library. For me, it's the combination of the individual elements that inspires.

Additional info for home bakers: This book (and the magazine it is based on) is geared towards professionals. Each recipe contains an ingredient list + short, straightforward instructions and not accompanied by photographs.

Lack of details

This book would be much more interesting for non professional bakers like me to use (although it says on the first page that the collection "arose due to the high level of demand from numerous pastry chefs throughout the world" --> not for me then?) if it had more details and if ingredients were always named the same: is there a difference between 'glucose', 'glucose syrup', 'liquid glucose'? I came accross a recipe that calls for 'liquid'!?! Without any detail on what it is... Water? Juice?...
Others call for 'gelatin', 'gelatine', 'gelatin mass', 'gelatin mix', 'gelatin powder', 'gelatin sheets'... I understand the recipes come from defferents chefs, but it doesn't make it very accessible for anyone who's not a pastry chef...
