Extremely Useful.

Whenever I read a book, I generally use highlighter and underliner to mark the sentences and words that convey the true meaning and essence of what the author wants to say. While reading The Tibetan Book of Living And Dying, I had to stop using the highlighter after a few pages only as the most of the words on each page were worthy of being highlighted. Indeed, the author has said so much precious on every page that a reader must read and re-read the book and with every reading she/he gets more and more knowing.The subject of death has been most puzzling and perplexing to humankind since the time immemorial. The Eastern way of looking at the death as only a 'transition' is explained by the author in a profoundly simple manner. The book certainly helps one to understand the true meaning of the phenomena called death. This understanding helps one to reduce the irrational fear of death. From the lives of the great men and women we know that those who 'lived' a life can only meet the 'death' with equnimity. Thus the author has first taught the art of 'living'. It is only through right type of living that we can 'live' the death also.
I suggest that this book be read by all the Buddhist as well as by non buddhists also. Every one who reads it will find something for him/her.
I salute Sogyal Rinpoche for giving us a wonderful gift of THE TIBETAN BOOK OF LIVING AND DYING.

After reading other reviews, I feel it might help to say this:
Yes, there is quite a substantial amount of Tibetan ritual encased in this book. But that shouldn't be a surprise, or a hindrance - it IS the "TIBETAN Book of Living and Dying", and not the "Generically Believable For Everyone, Book of Living And Dying".
With that in mind, I loved reading this book. From the first page, I was drawn into a world where compassion and mindfulness reign, and it's these tools that will help us face the inevitable truth that we *are* all going to die, at some point.
Rinpoche skillfully shares his own wisdom, that of many other masters, and anecdotal evidence of what may happen when we physically die, and the stages we may go through during the process.
Topics discussed include the Bardo states, reincarnation, the concept of karma, and fear of the unknown. The book is very readable, and covers the material therein with sensitivity and warmth. At times, it may be difficult to the average Western mind to grasp the concepts of such things are reincarnation - but as Buddha himself did advise, the goal is to read, absorb and take what YOU find important from the lesson...not to read blindly and accept everything blindly.
To anyone even vaguely interested in Buddhism, death and dying or simply becoming more aware of their own self, this book is an invaluable addition to your library.
Truly a classic.

a must for a Buddhist library

This book fully captures the essence of Tibetan Buddhism. I don't claim to be an authority on the subject, but I was born into a Buddhist household that has remained faithful and reverent to both Mahayana and Hiyana traditions of Buddhism. From the information I've had passed on to me by both family and Tibetan Buddhist clergy, this book has never been contradictory to anything lecture I've heard. In fact, everybody seems to recommend it enthusiastically!
Essentially, according to Tibetan Buddhism, the purpose of living is to cultivate the mind and purify the body and soul to prepare for death. Westerners may, at first glance, find this philosophy morbid. However, we must remember that reincarnation is integral to Buddhist text (and most world religions, for that matter; the 'one life' theory is actually relatively new). Death is explained as a transitional period, like the end of a chapter to a book. To waste away ones life is like wasting away all your money without care for the future. Basically, this philosophy heavily emphasizes living in the present with thoughtfulness and offers a plethora of Buddhist insight into life and death. It also stresses the urgency of cultivation in a day and age when we disregard life, old age, and disease as trivial matters and nothing that science cannot combat.
The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying is written by a Rinpoche. For those who are not familiar with Tibetan titles, a Lama is essentially a monk who has abandond wordly comforts for a spiritual pursuit, and a Rinpoche is a recognized reincarnation of an esteemed Lama.
If you are a Buddhist, I highly recommend this book. It is enlightening, insightful, and an absolute must in any Buddhist library. Whether you follow the traditions of Chinese Buddhism, Zen or Chan, take the Amitabha or Guan Yin approach, etc., as a fellow Buddhist to another, you should not go without having this book. It's available in Chinese, as well, for the Buddhists out there who are more adept at Chinese than English.
For seekers, this is a wonderful guide, as well. The best part with any book as wonderful as this is that everytime you read it, you'll find new insight in the words. Beginners and established Buddhists alike will take in much insight.
I also highly recommend this to Buddhists who are unfamiliar with the Tibetan traditions. The Tibetan texts will open a whole new door for you. I know from personal experience, because my mother (who is the spiritual leader of the family) was originally a student of Chinese Buddhism, but after reading this book, our entire family discovered a whole other arena of philosophies that have done nothing but enrich our practices.
So whether you're already a Buddhist wishing to broaden your knowledge, a Buddhist who would like new material to absorb, or a seeker who is just curious of the fundamentals of Tibetan Buddhism, this book is definitely a must.

A must-have for any student or professional

The 6th edition of Fundamentals of Building Construction is the absolute best yet. This is a classic text for students and budding professionals, whether your specialty is interior design, construction or architecture. Though it is intended to be a classroom textbook, you can read it independently (and I recommend you do even if you don't have to read it for school).

The updated text includes new renderings and photographs, which is both useful and nice. It is also updated to include information about construction innovations, sustainable building, the latest building codes and technical notes. Included with each new book is the interactive resource center access code, which includes super handy resources and additional information.

The book itself is chopped into 24 manageable chapters which begin with the foundations of building and building foundations. It then moves through wood construction, masonry, steel concrete and into roofing, glass, cladding and finishes with interiors. Every now and then the text is sprinkled with "From Concept to Reality" sections which, as the name implies, show you a real example of the technique being studied. This is super for me, because I learn better when I can fit the information I am learning into a real world example. The book also has ample illustrations, renderings and pictures to help cement the information.

Written by experts and meticulously detailed, this is a must have in the library of any student or professional who wants a handy reference or to learn more about the world of construction.

Good book, but somewhat wandering

This book is intended as a technical aid, but while it points to construction types and what they are for, it does little to give actual data or pointers on how these types can be leveraged in design. Instead of clean line drawings, we have renderings and photos which, while descriptive in different ways, are not particularly helpful in figuring out how to draw these things.

Spells it ALL out

This book doesn't pull any punches, covering all aspects of construction, from building sites to foundations to wood types to fasteners to framing, siding, windows, doors, concrete, masonry, glass, glazing, roof types, roofing and on and on and on. The authors aren't just touching on these subjects, but delving deeply into each one. For example, with regard to roofing, they discuss roofing underlayment, eaves, rakes, roof drainage, overhangs, area dividers, low-slope roofs, steep roofs, cool roofs, roofing codes, etc. But they don't just talk, they provide detailed cutaway views with dimensions, descriptions of what everything shown is and what it does. If you're an architect, structural engineer, construction manager, builder or anyone technically curious enough to learn the details of construction materials and methods, then an investment in your own copy of this book would certainly be worthwhile.

The book, by the way, also comes with an access code to the John Wiley and Sons Interactive Resource Center, but it's only good for 540 days (after which, I believe, you would have to pay for continued access), it's for student rather than professional access (not sure of the distinction), and the tools don't really offer much that the book itself doesn't. The code gives you access to images, animations, flash cards, renderings, self-tests and a glossary. As I said, nothing special there. The book's all you really need for your money.

David C. Ling (Ph.D, 1984, and MBA, 1977, The Ohio State University) is the William D. Hussey Professor of Real Estate and the Director of the Real Estate Research Center in the Warrington College of Business Adminstration and Graduate School of Business at the University of Florida. Professor Ling serves on numerous editorial boards including the Journal of Housing Economics, Real Estate Economics, The Journal of Real Estate Research, and Real Estate Finance. He has provided research and consulting services to several state and national organizations including the Federal National Mortgage Association, the National Association of Home Builders, the National Association of Realtors, and the Florida Association of Realtors. He is a Fellow of the Homer Hoyt Institute and board member of the Real Estate Research Institute.

Best Real Estate Fundamentals Book on the Market

It teaches students real skills rather than encouraging rote memorization as some real estate textbooks do. I very much like the concept check questions along the way and the many problems at the end of each chapter. It has a unifying framework based solidly on economics but covers enough institutional details to be of use for students who hope to get their realtors' licenses. Although I was a professor of real estate for four years before I taught from this book, reading the book still taught me a lot. It is also very current. McGraw-Hill also has an excellent set of instructor support materials.

Great book so far!

I just started reading it and have found it to be quite informational with a great format. I'm reading it for my Real Estate Principles class for my Business Degree.

Nice read for those new to investing and hedge funds

A nice intro to hedge funds, pretty useful if you are new to investing and are looking to learn the basic strategies used by hedge funds. The explanations are easy to understand and the writing is clear. However, if you are a sophisticated investors who have some familiarity with hedge funds and want more technical or detailed explanations, this book may be a little light. Still, for a novice, this would make a nice guide. Some basic knowledge of finance concepts (market efficiency, etc.) is useful, but a newbie would not be overwhelmed by this book.

A Nice Introduction

This edition is based on the first edition by Robert Jaeger, which was published in 2003. I have not read the first edition.

The book seems up to date. Of course, I am not that knowledgeable about hedge funds, and it was published in 2012, only two years ago. The treatment seems to be fairly comprehensive. The discussion is obviously a summary and overview, and lacks depth. The book discusses the CAPM and the efficient market hypothesis. It then goes on to say that the EMH has been refuted by behavioral economics. It mentions the work of Andrew Lo and Robert Shiller. All through the book talks about how institutional investors have come over to investing in hedge funds. The issue for institutional investors is not so much the absolute returns that hedge funds are known for. Rather, institutions may be more interested diversification and returns that are uncorrelated with the market, and protection against market shocks.

The book was a nice introduction to hedge funds. The primary idea that I came away with is that hedge funds are able to take both long and short positions in market securities. Whereas, mutual funds are primarily long-only investors. Hedge funds, of course, are not subject to all the regulations and reporting requirements that constrain mutual funds.

Very moving

Seeking Allah, Finding Jesus is the true tale of Nabeel Qureshi's journey from being raised a devout Muslim to his conversion as a follower of Jesus.

I knew I was in trouble when I had only listened a few seconds. The dedication at the beginning of the book, read by the author himself, had me bawling like a baby. It is dedicated to his parents, who are still in the Muslim faith. It is so honoring and beautiful, you can't help but cry.

The entire book is read by Qureshi and it is read very well. His voice is clear and soothing; his accent is soft and mesmerizing. Obviously, the story is very personal to him and his emotions come through in his reading perfectly.

The story itself is also incredible. It was beautiful to soak in his loving childhood. It was very informative as to the beliefs of his family. I was unaware of how much disagreement about doctrine that there is within different Muslim beliefs and Qureshi walks through them carefully and respectfully. I found his descriptions of East vs. West thoughts about guilt/shame societies to be very illuminating. It truly is a completely different perspective and makes an incredible difference for anyone with the opportunity to be a witness to a Muslim.

LOVED this book!!

I have to say that as a Christian, before reading this book, I had very little knowledge of the Muslim faith and how Muslim children are raised. This book gave me a peek into that world in a very personal and moving way, helping me better understand what they really believe and how to reach them. Two key points I found very convicting: as a Muslim, Nabeel was never invited into a Christian home AND, until meeting David Wood, he never encountered a Christian who knew his/her Bible or theology well enough to defend it. As a Muslim, Nabeel prided himself on being able to take on any Christian on any biblical topic and eviscerate their feeble arguments, which is sad to think about, since apologetics gives us so many concrete, historically based reasons to believe . We're not befriending our neighbors and we're not educating ourselves or our children. We're not obeying II Timothy 4:2 by being ready in season and out to share our faith with those who so desperately need to hear the Truth. This book is helpful on so many levels. I highly recommend it to anyone who is serious about obeying the Great Commission.

Highly recommend.

I bought this book digitally elsewhere when it was on sale. I expected to gain insight into the Muslim culture and religion. What I didn't expect was to learn half as much about the Bible and converts as I did about the Quran and Islam. Enlightening and a very compelling story of the author's journey and struggles. Highly recommend.

UPDATE:
This comes after reading two more of these kind of stories.

Suffice it to say I've become fascinated with these stories of late, and I believe God lead me to read them because I can't explain why I spontaneously decided to start the first one (of three, so far) when I hadn't read an actual book in years. All three came from a very similar culture, and at the same time, different. One was an academic from a loving family (Seeking Allah, Finding Jesus). The second was a rebellious kid (Ex-Muslim). The third one was an abused little girl (Hiding in the Light). But all three had the strict Islamic culture and religion ingrained in them from birth. It's different from ours in ways most of us don't realize.
Now, I can discuss science and the Bible. I can discuss evolution, creation and everything in between. I've read a few books on those subjects, too. While looking for one of these books in the Mardel book section, the man that was helping me told me of his missionary friend who had worked extensively in the Middle East. His friend had become convinced that if Muslims were to come to Christ, it would be through supernatural encounters, visions, dreams, etc. After reading these books, I'm inclined to agree, but I believe this is the case with many more than just Muslims. All three of these books are filled with examples of this. I was brought to tears more than once in each of their stories. I, myself, have had similar experiences, as have some members of my family. I'm not a big fan of atlas like books in radiology, and thincked twice before I decided to purchase this book. But now I feel myself satisfied. Really good atlas in neuroradiology, not so much text, a lot of images and very good brief description of almost all neuroradiology practice conditions. The principle of "patterns" works well in daily practice, when you know what you see, but need fast and brief confirmation of your diagnosis version. Easy to search and too easy to get information you need. Nice effort from authors and McGraw Hill Company. Recommended for all general radiologists and last year residents.

Bought, leafed through it, then quickly returned it.

I thought by the description it would be an updated version of the Yock Neuro book that everyone likes, but hasn't been updated in a long time and can't be found anymore.

The descriptions are superficial, some are a waste of time, and even though I'm not that great in neuro I found a few outright errors.

With Yousem's book almost a complete failure in clarity, and Osborne's book woefully out of date, the Neuro void yawns before us all. I have high hopes for the Problem Solving in Neuro. please God, someday give me a good Neuro book.

Sebastian Mallaby on Hedge Funds

I set out to write the history of hedge funds for two reasons. Explaining the most secretive subculture of our economy posed an irresistible investigative challenge; and the common view of hedge funds seemed ripe for correction. Hedge funds were generally regarded as the least stable part of the financial system. Yet they managed risk better than banks, investment banks, insurers, and so on—and they did so without a safety net from taxpayers.

Four years on, the book is done; and both my original motivations have been vindicated. Unearthing the story of hedge funds has been pure fun: From the left-wing anti-Nazi activist , A. W. Jones, to the irrepressible cryptographer, Jim Simons, the story of hedge funds is packed full of larger than life characters. Getting my hands on internal documents from George Soros’s Quantum Fund; visiting Paul Tudor Jones and reading the eureka emails he wrote in the middle of the night; poring over the entire set of monthly letters that the Julian Robertson wrote during the twenty year life of his Tiger fund; interviewing Stan Druckenmiller, Louis Bacon, and hundreds of other industry participants: my research has yielded a wealth of investment insights, as well as an understanding of why governments frequently collide markets. Meanwhile, the financial crisis of 2007-2009 vindicated my hypothesis that hedge funds are the good guys in finance. They came through the turmoil relatively unscathed, and never took a cent of taxpayers’ money.

Since the book has come out, many readers have posed the skeptical question: Do hedge funds really make money systematically? The answer is an emphatic yes; and without giving the whole book away, I can point to a couple of reasons why hedge funds do outsmart the supposedly efficient market.

First, hedge funds often trade against people who are buying or selling for some reason other than profit. In the currency markets, for example, hedge funders such as Bruce Kovner might trade against a central bank that is buying its own currency because it has a political mandate to prop it up. In the credit markets, likewise, a hedge fund such as Farallon might trade against pension funds whose rules require them to sell bonds of companies in bankruptcy. It’s not surprising that hedge funds beat the market when they trade against governments and buy bonds from forced sellers.

Second, the hedge-fund structure makes people compete harder. There is an incentive to manage the downside: hedge-fund managers have their own money in their funds, so they lose personally if they take losses. There is an incentive to seek out the upside: hedge-fund managers keep a fifth of their funds’ profits. This combination explains why hedge funds were up in 2007, when most other investors were losing their shirts; it explains why they were down in 2008 by only half as much as the S&P 500 index. People sometimes suggest that hedge funds survived the subprime bubble by fluke—perhaps their ranks include wacky misfits who are naturally contrarian. But there is more to it than that. John Paulson poured $2 million in the research that gave him the conviction to bet against the bubble. The hedge-fund structure created the incentive to make that investment.

Financial risk is not going away. Currencies and interest rates will rise and fall; there will be difficult decisions about how to allocated scarce capital in a sophisticated and specialized economy. The question is who will manage this risk without demanding a taxpayer backstop. The answer is hiding in plain sight: To a surprising and unrecognized degree, the future of finance lies in the history of hedge funds.

So well written (and I'm a picky reader)! This is a sweet, feel-good story not only for grammies and grampies but any adult who wants to make sure their little ones understand that they will be loved for ever and ever. Amazing illustrations pair perfectly with this charming, witty tale...warms the heart through and through. I purchased this for myself but also plan to give this book as a gift to friends and family. Highly recommended!

Groundbreaking story of family devotion

This is a beautifully written book that explores the bond between a grandmother and her daughter. It brought tears to my eyes because I could relate to how it addressed the changing relationship as the granddaughter grows up and remember my continually changing relationship with my own daughter over the years. The bond is always there and this book documents it so poinantly.
