I did view the movie which I also recommend having. It just helps explain the man

.....still "reviewing" the book as I've recently purchased several on Mapplethorpe including the movie CD of his life with Sam Wagstaff. I did view the movie which I also recommend having. It just helps explain the man....actually both men to some degree. Mapplethorpe was a complicated man....or so it seems through the eyes of books about him and of course his photography. If you're a collector of all things Mapplethorpe this is one for the collection.

My love for my father and brother, Guy, will continue to be as strong as it has been my entire life. This book is not only about the horrific acts of Diane Schuler and the suffering that she has caused so many people but also about the added pain caused by those who fabricated stories about her actions that day. I was raised in an Italian-American family. My father taught me how important family is. I especially remember when he told me that my brother will "alwaysbe [my] brother" and that I should always be there for him--and that my brother would always be there for me. My brother was always there for me. In keeping the promise that I made to my father, I hope this book can in some way speak for my brother, Guy, and my father. They are two of the greatest people the world will ever have known.

On July 26, 2009 Diane Schuler packed up the campsite, piled five children into her minivan and headed for home on Long Island after a weekend of camping, a drive that should have taken two hours from upstate N.Y.
Four hours later she sped down the Taconic State Parkway in Westchester County driving in the wrong direction. As panicked motorists swerved out of her way, she continued for almost two miles. Blowing horns, flashing lights and waiving arms did nothing to deter her. Rounding a curve in the road, she rocketed head on into an oncoming SUV. The vehicles seemed to explode as they hit. The minivan plunged downhill and burst into flames as the SUV was pushed across two lanes and struck by another SUV. In the smoldering vehicle and twisted metal scattered along the highway, lay the bodies of eight people.
Days later came the headlines;

Heartbreaking on MANY Levels

From day one, I was captivated by this story. From the accident itself, to the surprising twist that Diane Schuler was drunk and high, to the sad denials of a husband left behind to care for a sole survivor, this is a truly heartbreaking story. I could not wait for this book to arrive to gain another viewpoint from the Bastardi family after watching the HBO documentary. I understand the pain the Bastardis feel must be unbearable at times, but to demean the Hance Family about the foundation they found in their children's name to help underprivledged children and 'joking' that the sole survivior, a young boy, would have high chances of turning out to be an alcoholic or a drug addict was just disturbing.

I found this book almost truly unreadable at times. The Bastardi family did lose a lot that day and I am not taking anything away from that, but the Hance family lost not only their children, but much much more that day. I feel that this book in its entirety was written out of true anger. If you have interest in this case, this is a book you might want to pick up, but otherwise, don't bother.

A terrible bashing!

I am from westchester NY, and have driven this route everyday for 15 years. I read Jackie Hance's book and found her memoir heart wrenching! She was paralyzed with enormous grief, losing all 3 of her children is incomprehensible... If that was me I wouldn't care too much about details or talking to investigators. She just wanted to die! She couldn't part take in interviews or conferences because she was barely hanging on to her sanity! The Bastardi's lost alot too.. Mike lost his father and brother, which has to be hard and I don't mean to compare losses, but the Hance's and Daniel Shuler lost children. I don't see Daniel Schuler as an acompliance, I see him as a husband and father who is so lost in grief that he just can't comprehend or believe his wife would kill all these people. He defends her because if he chooses to believe his wife, mother of his children, could be so careless as to drink and drive, he could never forgive himself for not knowing... Alcoholics can hide there addiction from loved one, and reading the facts about Diane's childhood and controlling personality proves that she had issues... She would never allow others to see, hear or know she was a slave to the bottle because that would prove she wasn't in control after all!

As I've said, I've read both books. Jackie's book was well written with sincerity. She didn't bad mouth anyone, she showed class and dignity. Her book was heartbreaking! The Bastardi's book left me feeling like these people were uneducated, ignorant and careless! As I've said, I sympathize with their pain, those 3 men did not deserve to lose their life over a stupid and thoughtless act, however this does not give the Bastardi's the right to accuse Warren and Daniel of being responsible for their deaths! It's natural for the family to want justice for the death of their family members and its even expected for them to talk amongst themselves about how they feel the Hance's and Shulers are partially responsible. I'm sure most of us would do the same thing. I don't blame them for feeling and saying the horrible things they said, the moment they said them because they were grieving!. However, its unacceptable to publicly express these feelings, resentments, and accusations ever!

I lost all sympathy for the Bastardi's the second I read that they felt Warren is at fault in some way! So, in a nutshell; Jackie's book was tasteful and classy, the Bastardi's book was the exact opposite!

Not the best for $30 bucks

I have to admit I was a bit behind when it came to this case. In fact the first real exposure I had was from the HBO documentary. The first problem I have with the book was the price. I understand it was a small publisher but 30 bucks for 200 pages is outrageous. I also found the fact that Jeanne Bastardi was writing about herself in the third person super annoying. I feel if you want to write a memoir about the case do that this referring to yourself as Jeanne and Mike was really not my thing. Also there are a ton of people in this book with very little relevance to the case. Obviously this being a large Italian family there are lots of cousins,aunts,sister-in-law yadda yadda. To be honest I had to page back to see who this or that was and evetually I just read on. As far as this case goes I think everyone needs to come to the conclusion we will never know. Unless Bryan Schuler can make some sort of breakthrough in therapy and reveals something I feel there is no one else to answer these questions. Diane took her reasons to the grave and unfortunatley took many innocent lives in the process. I feel for the Bastardis I do which is why I read their book. But I will say the attempt to deamonize The Hances was a bit much for me. Warren and Jackie Hance I'm sure replay all decesions made that day for which they paid the ultimate price with the loss of all their daughters. I'm not sure I would have acted any differantly. As the saying goes hind sight is 20/20. I really hope all famlies involved will find peace with this as I'm almost positive there will never be closure.

About the Author
Michael H. Thaut. Ph.D., RMT is the coordinator of graduate studies in music and music therapy at Colorado State University. He earned his doctorate from Michigan State University in 1983, and has served as Director of Music Therapy at the Riverside Correctional Facility. He is the director of the interdisciplinary Center for Biomedical Research at Colorado state, and is an ccompished musician.

Neurologic Music Therapy at its finest

I should start by saying that I am student of music therapy especially fascinated by neuroscience.

Michael Thaut's book is essentially a detailed account of the philosophy, mathematical rationale, scientific evidence, and techniques behind Neurologic Music Therapy, a sub-field of music therapy that utilizes musical rhythm to treat various maladies. Thaut, of course, is essentially the father of Neurologic Music Therapy; this book provides the bases for his entire body of research. ANY MUSIC THERAPIST INTERESTED IN NEUROLOGIC MUSIC THERAPY SHOULD OWN IT AND READ IT!!

In terms of accessibility, to anyone interested in music therapy, neuroscience, or different ways to think about musical rhythm. To the layperson, portions will seem dense; however, any lover of music will get more insight into the power of musical rhythm. Some readers will certainly struggle through the middle chapters on motor optimization. But I encourage anyone who is genuinely interested to stick with it. Thaut's strength is not as a visionary poet per se but as an integrator of various academic fields. He understands how to weave music, math, neuroscience, and medicine together seamlessly.

Much of Neurologic Music Therapy focuses on rhythm-driven optimization of motor control. Perhaps a better title for the book, therefore, would have been "Musical Rhythm, Movement, and the Brain." For readers especially interested in prosody and other areas of music-related linguistics, I would suggest Ani Patel's "Music, Language, and the Brain" as a more appropriate collection of research.

This book was exciting resources for me. It answered my questions regarding recent experiences of sudden dream recalls after practice singing Baroque music, intensely. When we get older, we start noticing this and that, diminishing or lost. So good side of this state is that when it changes there is a chance of awakening! Great new discovery! Naka 2

If you only purchase one book on bonsai techniques, get this one. If you can purchase 2, then get his first one as well. Naka explores bonsai forms and styles with the gentle persuasion of a kind teacher. Even by today's standards, this book looks at revolutionary concepts. Also, it's a simple book in that it offers simple solutions for difficult problems. Is your buttress decomposing? Use bondo! Things like that. Hard to imagine that it was written in the early 80's. Naka has us relate to bonsai as bonsai relates to nature. To the trees found in nature. He reminds us of what we are really striving for with trees in miniature. Essentially: trees in miniature. He has a profound respect for nature, and it's catching. The overall feel of the book is for tree styling. Form, symmetry, redundancy, balance, branch placement, triangular pattern diagrams, etc. and the distribution of power in a bonsai. Top to bottom. This book has it all. For content I give it 5 stars. It's a one of a kind book. The only one you'll ever need. (But also check out Kimura's book, Peter Adams, and Craig Coussin's master books) Definitely my favorite. I give it four stars because of the print quality. A book of this stature and importance should have a better publisher/printer. Hell, it should be printed on silk. The paper is common print paper that is easily torn. The print is black and white and without quality, clarity, or depth. Basically, if you have ever made black and white copies using an old xerox machine, the quality is exactly the same. If you have the .pdf, use your printer to print this book out. It would be of much higher quality. This book is way, way, way, way, way, over priced, it probably cost them $7.50 to publish this virtually 'xerox copy book' but after checking around, the prices for this book are mostly all the same. Cheapest here. Lastly, this book isn't just for advanced students, but for beginning students as well. To be among the best, you read the best books on the subjects. You don't read crappy books first and then move onto better books. You read the best book you can find and study it long and hard until you understand the material. Anyway, get this book whoever you are, period.

This is the second of two great books by John Y. Naka. This book breaks the tree down, and goes into greater detail about each section of the tree. Then it gets into pots and how to display your bonsai. Both these books are worth the price, and if your into bonsai you need both his book.
